Nurse Goals Final

Among the many duties of nurses they also have the role of educators that rises from their education and practice roles. As a nurse educator I will strive to be an expert on diet and exercise based interventions. I can take this role as a patient educator, or as a hospital based educator.

To achieve this objective I am going to undertake the following activities and use the following strategies. First, I will strive to be passionate and caring about people who need diet and exercise interventions. I will spend a substantial part of my day reading course materials on diet and exercise interventions (Ely and Scott 2007). In addition, I will spend more time researching on effectiveness of diet interventions. However, knowledge obtained from research and course materials will not help if it is not shared with patients, peers and students. Therefore, I will strive to develop writing and communication skills that can convince peers, patients and nurses to apply diet and exercise interventions. I will also need to enhance my time management skills to be able to balance my current role with the educator role.

Like other aspirations, the goal of becoming an expert educator on diet and exercise has to follow certain steps (Penn, Wilson and Rosseter 2008). In the first step, I will asses my current level of knowledge, education, skills and attributes. From the assessment I will be able to make my individualized plan to achieve the goal. Some of activities that will be in my individualized plan include taking up opportunities where I can act as an educator (Ely and Scott 2007). These include joining the patient education committee, being a preceptor and a mentor. I will also research and write an article on the effectiveness of diet and exercise interventions. In addition, I will attend conferences on diet and exercise intervention. I will also seek a mentor who I will consult and seek help in expanding my network of support (Mannix, Wilkes and Luck 2009).

After graduation my long-term goal will to be obtain qualifications that can enable me become Clinical Specialist in Pediatrics. A Clinical Nurse Specialist is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) who has the responsibility to improve delivery of care by influencing nurses, patients and systems (Darmody 2008). As a CNS in Pediatrics my primary focus will be the improvement of care for children and their patient outcomes. As a CNS I will have the role of creating an environment where evidence-based practices are quickly adopted and the system of healthcare continuously changed to alleviate child patient’s distress and respond to various patient issues facing children. According to Darmody (2008), a CNS in Pediatrics has a number of duties which I have to prepare to fulfil. First, he/she has to practice in the care delivery to children in both inpatient and outpatient, community and school settings. Secondly, they are consulted by other medical staff, nurses and interdisciplinary colleagues on pediatric clinical decisions. Thirdly, they act as system change agents that help in the improvement of care to youths and children. Moreover, they are advocates of evidence-based practice and improvements. They also act as educators for other pediatric nurses in both the educational settings.

Among my responsibilities as CNS will be the diagnosis and treatment of ailments, health promotion, disease management, prevention of conditions and associated risk behaviors among communities, families, groups and children (McDonald 2010). In summary, my long-term goal is to become a clinical expert in the delivery of care to children and the improvement of health system through evidence-based practice. Undoubtedly, a CNS in pediatric is a fulfilling job that can enable me touch the lives of many children and this is why I have chosen it as my long-term career option.

My first step in becoming an CNS in Pediatrics will be the pursuit of a master degree in nursing and pediatric care. The masters degree will give the skill, background and specific training that I will need to become a clinical expert in Pediatrics (McDonald 2010). I feel the advanced research skills taught in the masters degree will increase my ability to gather and apply evidence-based practices. The skill, knowledge and expertise gained in the masters program is critical for success as a CNS in an specific field.

However, knowledge is only part of the ingredients of success as I strive to become a become a CNS in pediatrics. To become a successful CNS in pediatrics I will have a passionate nurse and who honestly cares about the distress of child patients (Ely and Scott 2007). To retain and increase my motivation to give back to society I will read motivational literature and the stories of great nurse who have provided motivations for generations of nurses. I will keep in mind, that success as an APRN is dependent on motivation for nursing work, critical thinking skills as well as educational knowledge and research. Consequently, I will strive to be up to date with new knowledge in nursing and medicine.

A CNS in pediatrics plays an important role as a teacher for other pediatric nurses. To become a successful CNS in pediatrics I will have to start by compassionately sharing my knowledge with peers. I am already engaged in these activities as I research current evidence-based practices in nursing and share the knowledge with my colleagues (Kelly 2007). Currently, I model caring and active listening as I interact with colleagues, patients and the relatives.

I believe becoming a CNS in pediatrics will enable me give back to the community. I will dedicate myself to obtaining the essential skills, motivation and expertise I need to provide care and ensure enhancement of pediatric care in the system.
