Nuclear fusion and fission 2

Nuclear energy

According to Charles (2008), nuclear energy is a kind of energy produced through nuclear reaction processes known as nuclear fusion. This is a process which involves reaction between two or more nuclei when they jointly form a fresh element with superior atomic number. On the other, the article from Oracle ThinkQuest Education Foundation describes nuclear energy as a type of energy produced through a process whereby massive nucleus are split into photons in a kind of free neutrons, gamma rays and several subatomic particles. 1Nuclear fission and nuclear fusion are two diverse kinds of reactions that release energy; this is according to Charles’ article. In the his article, Charles argues that the major disparity between fission and fusion processes is that fusion process involves fusing of two or several small molecules into a bigger one while fission involves splitting of molecules into two or several small ones. According to both articles the main advantage of nuclear energy is that releases a million times more energy, as compared to hydro or wind energy and that it does not release greenhouse gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbon and ozone during the reaction process. Conversely the major disadvantage of nuclear energy according to both articles is that it can be used in proliferation and production of dangerous weapons.

Conclusion

Nuclear energy is a form of energy produced through nuclear reaction; this form of energy is advantageous in that it releases over one million times more energy, as compared to hydro or wind energy and that it does not release greenhouse gases. The only disadvantage however, is that it can be used to produce nuclear weapons.
