Nuclear Capabilities in North Korea

The republic of North Korea has various nuclear weapon programs and well tested explosive devices. Moreover, the country is capable to enrich uranium and produce a number of weapons in plutonium grade (Takada, 1684). The kinds of missiles deployed are of short or rather medium range ballistics. However, in the year 2012, North Korea successfully launched its first long range rocket. This nation is party to Biological and Toxic Weapon Convention (BWTC), though it is suspected to possess various offensive weapons, defiance to the agreed treaty.

The nation’s interest in nuclear weapons dates back to the end of the Second World War. Since then, it has mastered the general cycle of nuclear fuel alongside uranium and plutonium programs that are capable of creating any fissile material (Habib, 2827). In the year 2008, North Korea declared possession of about 38.5 kilograms of weapon-grade plutonium that is extracted from fuel rods. Furthermore, in the year 2010 the nation unveiled a uranium program whose intention was to produce lower enriched uranium to be used for power reactors. There have been a series of nuclear weapon tests in the years 2006, 2009 and latest 2013.

One major uncertainty to the country’s nuclear program occurred immediately after the death of Kim Jong 11. This is when a decision to suspend the nuclear test was reached. However, after the 2012 dispute with the USA, it declared the agreement void and restarted all the nuclear programs and facilities that also included uranium enriching plant and a graphite reactor.
