Creative activities are defined as those industries which exhibit levels of personal creativity, talent and skill. In addition to this, these activities have a great potential for the creation of jobs and wealth (Roodhouse, 2009). These activities make up creative industries. There are various sectors which are considered to be part of creative industries which includes: architecture film, software, music, radio and television, designer fashion, art and crafts, design, film and advertising (Roodhouse, 2009). Creative industries have risen to be one of the key industries in the global economy. Ideally, the fact that traditional industries such as industries and agriculture have reached maturity, there has been the need to come up with creative economic activities. The following paper will analyze the Burj al Arab, which is the fourth largest hotel building in the world with respect to its position in creative industry.

 Burj al Arab is Arabic for the Tower of Arabs. The hotel is situated in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The hotel is a gem to the eye. Its architectural design stands out as one of the most creative designs of the modern age in addition to being an important landmark of Dubai. The following picture shows a front view of  Burj al Arab.

As indicated above,  Burj al Arab is a masterpiece of architecture and design; hence is warranted to be included in creative industries. The following section will describe key features of  Burj al Arab.

First of all, it is important to note that  Burj al Arab is constructed on an artificial island. By all standards, it is worth acknowledging the hotel is constructed on a creative site. The artificial islands are located 280 meters offshore. The engineers took three years in order to reclaim the site from the sea. The architectural design of the island is the first creative aspect of  Burj al Arab. The following picture shows the location of Burj al Arab relative to the shore.

The architectural design of the building is also a mark of creativity. The building assumes the shape of a dhow. The vast mast of the hotel is formed from the v shaped vast mast which is formed from the spreading of the hotel’s two wings. A large hall is enclosed in between the 2 wings. The hotel also boasts of a 24 m wide helipad which is located 210 meters above the ground surface. The hotel also has an atrium located 590 feet on top of the lobby and consumes a third of the hotels total space (Mehwish 2012). The following picture illustrates this great architectural design.

The following section will analyse Burj al Arab with respect to the characteristics of creative industries as proposed by Caves. The first characteristic of creative industries is that no one knows the principle owing to the uncertainty of the reaction from the market (Cave, 2003). This is because of the fact that creative activities are usually new to the market; hence they are not usually tested to ascertain their feasibility. This explains the way in which the building was given a resemblance to the Christian cross although the designers did not see that in the initial phases. The hotel was also received warmly in the market and is sometimes referred to as the only 7 star hotel in the world owing to its uniqueness.

Another characteristic of creative industries is that art is taken for art’s sake only (Cave, 2003). On this, it can be acknowledged that the originators of an idea have great emphasis on technical professionalism and harmony in their work. The owners of the hotel wanted a building which would be an image of Dubai; hence their commitment to creativity in the architectural design. creative industries are also characterized by the motley crew principle which stipulates that a given piece of work need diversified skills to be successful. The vast number of skilled manpower needed to complete the hotel is an illustration of this. Creative industries are also characterized by an infinite variety in that the final product is a combination of uniqueness and quality. The great look of Burj al Arab is a manifestation of this.

Creative activities are also associated with A and B list which indicate the differentiation of the skills in the activity. Key to the construction of the Burj al Arab was the architectural and engineering skills. The last principle of creative industries is Ars longa which is concerned with the durability aspects of a product (Cave, 2003). On this point, it is worth noting that the architectural design of Burj al Arab is protected hence cannot be copied in its exact form by any other developer.

As of now, Burj al Arab stands out to be one of the major landmarks in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and in the world at large. The building is the largest hotel building in the world. In addition to this, Burj al Arab is the tallest building which has a membrane facade. It also houses the world’s tallest tennis court . The tennis court is shown in the photograph below.

In conclusion, it can be appreciated from this paper that Burj al Arab is one of the players in the creative industries. The paper has identified that creative industries are as a result of creative activities which involve personal creativity, talent and skill. In addition to this, these activities have a great potential for the creation of jobs and wealth. Burj al Arab is a great architectural work which illustrates the face of Dubai and United Arab Emirates at large. The paper has also highlighted the characteristics of creative industries as proposed by Cave. Summing up, Burj al Arab is the tallest hotel building in the world which also boasts of being the tallest building with a membrane facade. In addition to this, the hotel is built on an artificial island and its sail shaped design makes it a perfect example of a great project in the creative industry.
