R&B/Pop Music

Rhythm and Blues (R&B) music was first referred to as “race music” and was intended for black audience. It was a combination of jazz, blues and gospel (Cavallari, 2003). Migration during World War II birthed urban black audience who needed new sounds and music and R&B started as a result. According to Cavallari (2003), this kind of music consists of steady rhythms and a lot of instruments which in effect creates numerous layers of music. Atlanta was the centre of early R&B music (“History of R&B music”, 2012). Over the years, R&B music has evolved to include different styles and a more universal audience. The 21st century R&B music, also known as contemporary R&B incorporates different styles which include pop, hip-hop, jazz and rap. R&B music have some of the most successful, popular and highly paid artists in the world like, R. Kelly, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys among others.

Pop music basically refers to popular music. It is music for the urban youth that mostly hits the charts and tops playlists in radio stations. Contemporary R&B focuses on pop beats and culture. It combines elements of R&B, hip-hop, funk and soul.

Conclusion for R&B Music

R&B music and artists continue to dominate charts all over the world. Some of most famous artists perform in this genre. R&B is here to stay although the style keeps evolving and the lines of distinction from other genres keep blurring. Fans keep looking for charts and ranking sites to find out which of their favourite artists make it to the number 1 spot.
