BRITISH PETROLEUM’S OFFICIAL POSITION ON THE PROGRESS OF THE CONTAINMENT OF OIL LEAK FROM THE SOUTH AMERICAN OCEAN PIPELINE

The Truth the Media Selectively Ignores

London, England – 1 August 2014.

The local and international media has been awash with news of the oil spill at our ocean pipeline in South America. The interest this accident has generated is manifestation of the deep interest that the media and the global society have in keeping our environment safe and holding companies responsible for their actions. While we at BP appreciates the interest that this issue has generated over the past week, we believe that the media fraternity has a responsibility to report responsibly and focus on the truth and credible facts. Contrary to what is reported in some sections of the media, BP is doing everything within its powers and humanly possible to address the issue and contain the oil spill within the quickest time possible.

Our actions and efforts, both as a company and in collaboration with the communities and relevant authorities, are based on investigation carried and coordinated by scientific investigation apparatuses in collaboration with the local and international officials and researchers. They are aimed at resolving the issue within the fastest time possible but the most effective and long lasting method(s) possible under the circumstances.

Our initial response of using vacuums and centrifuges to suck up the contaminated water has been halted. Contrary to what some media outlets reported as a failure, BP has instead opted for a more efficient approach: bioremediation. Currently, we are collaborating with relevant authorities in releasing biological agents capable of breaking down and remove the oil from the water surface. Studies have shown that this approach is 200 times faster than natural processes and is also safer. It is an indication of our commitment to only contain the spillage faster and also our commitment towards environmental safety.

However, it is imperative to note that there are no quick fixes for the current predicament we face. Riding the region of the oil will take years: years of hard work and commitment to eradicate the current spill while also preventing further ones. Moreover, successful cleanup and recovery in the face of such a disaster is determined by various factors such as water temperature, beach and shoreline types and quantity of oil spilt. Regrettably, some of these factors are beyond human control.

BP is built upon the foundation of “better people, better products, big picture, beyond petroleum.” We continually strive to be a world-class business despite operating in a high risk-industry. We are committed to be responsible citizen. It is these ideals that saw the company win the much coveted American Petroleum Institute (API) Occupational Safety and Environmental Performance award. in the words of Don Porter, our chief of US operations, “it is our long-term commitment to continually improve its safety and environmental performance.” BP will continue to address its operational challenges and manage its environmental impacts systematically and based on scientific and most effective methods.

British Petroleum is one of the largest oil and gas corporations specializing in exploration, production, marketing refining of gas and oil. With operations in over 80 countries across the globe, BP is one of the largest companies globally in terms of market capitalisation.
