  1. Proposed Manufacturing Techniques for the Prototype

Cannon PVC Pipe

The cannon was made of a PVC pipe manufactured by the suspension polymerization process. This process involves the insertion of the Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) into the reactor. Water and suspending agents are also added into the reactor hence forming tiny droplets of VCM. A catalyst is then fed into the reactor to accelerate formation of PVC which is then dried using centrifugation.

The main advantage of suspension polymerization is that unlike other polymerization processes, it is not only environmental friendly, but also very economical as it uses minimal catalyst. The disadvantage, however, is that electrolytes are likely to destabilize the emulsion if salty water is used.

Cannon Springs

The spring used in the cannon is a compression spring designed and manufactured by Century Springs Corporation whose elasticity has been reliably tested prior to use.

Cannon Bracket

The brackets offer firmness to the cannon and are fastened using two bolts. The manufacturing process for the steel brackets is shearing, punching, and bending of the sheet material. The clearance, c, for the shearing process may be calculated as follows:

Punching is then done to generate holes through which the screws will be used to hold together the cannon and the plate. Finally, the edge bending process follows in which the brackets are shaped into right angles through bending.

Cannon Base Plate

In order to stabilize the cannon, a steel cannon base plate is used. The cannon base plate also serves as a restraint of the trigger mechanism as it awaits the actual trigger. Steel is particularly chosen because of its light weight and strength. Using shearing to shape the steel sheet, the clearance, c is calculated by:

Trigger Mechanism

For this cannon, the trigger mechanism is a rod made of steel whose manufacture process is bar-drawing – a process that involves the use of a die opening to produce the steel rod. The rod triggering is controlled by the cannon springs at both sides of the steel rod. In bar drawing, the bar is taken through a die which ultimately adjusts the shape of the bar and stretches the length into a steel rod. The advantage of this process is that it strengthens the steel material used. Its disadvantage is that it is very uneconomical for small scale production.

  1. Manufacturing Techniques for Mass Production

For mass production, it would be economical to use already-manufactured PVC pipes instead of self-manufacturing through suspension polymerization which is not only less costly but also time saving. In a similar way, the steel rod (for the trigger mechanism), the cannon springs, and the brackets will be outsourced. For the base plate, however, it would be more economical to buy large sheets of steel and cut out according to the desired design. This will ensure uniformity and cost saving.

  1. Materials Choice for Mass Production

For mass production, it would be necessary to consider the strength and cost of the materials used such that the overall cost of manufacturing is significantly lowered. This eventually translates to competitive pricing of the end product (the cannon) hence making it affordable to the end consumers. The availability of the materials to be used and their long-term supply is also a factor to consider in selecting the materials for mass production. This ensures sustainability. If these factors are put into consideration, the PVC material and steel metal would still be retained as the materials of choice for mass production of the cannon. Both are easily available, strong, and future supply is guaranteed. Moreover, steel is very strong yet light hence easy to work on.
