Question 1

Some of the most important environmental cues that influence my communication expectations include the room or immediate surroundings, the atmosphere (which could be warm, formal, or virtual) and the mediums of communication (Such as a speaker, screen, or a mobile phone).

Question 2

In communication, context is highly influenced by the language and culture that people grew up with. Some cultures do not allow certain behavioral traits, dressing, or speech, which significantly alters the way messages are communicated. In addition, the formal or informal contexts will make people live up to certain societal or group expectations of behavior and communication.

Question 3

I learnt that effective communication involves asking questions at the end of a speech, and asking the audience whether they have any queries regarding my speech.

Question 4

In some forums, being able to get people’s attention in order to address them may be difficult. In order to get attention, some of the words I may use are “Excuse me please” or ask “May I please have your attention?”

Question 5

In order to get the attention to myself, some of the cues I can use are to maintain eye contact and maintain a position that faces the person I intend to address. I may also attempt to present myself in a manner that encourages communication from my audience, such as smiling.

Question 6

My perception of being offended was a result of lack of effective communication, which resulted in misunderstanding between the person I was communicating with and myself.

Question 7

When someone lost my trust, it was difficult for them to earn it back, as I was more inclined to be prudent with them the next time I associated myself with them. It was only after a lengthy process of discussions and time apart from them that I was able to trust them.

Question 8

The communicator has a responsibility of relaying the message in a way that they feel the audience will understand (Hearth 23). The audience is also responsible for ensuring that they listen and internalize the message being communicated.
