Engineering and Philosophy


Mark Bessoudo, who is an engineer in Canada works for green buildings and built environmental sustainability as a consultant and writes many subjects, science and philosophy included. According to him, the two items are similar since they represent our efforts to understanding the universe. Mark’s tests are said to be eclectic. Mark pursued a bachelor’s degree in the field of environmental engineering between the years 2002 and 2005 at Dalhousie University. Mark Bessoudo has worked as sustainability and Green Building consultant for the last eight years. He has also worked as a research assistant in Canadian Solar Buildings Research Network for two years and six months from the year 2005 Mark has skills in the following fields: critical thinking, energy, environmental policy, sustainable reporting, LEED, writing, renewable energy, sustainability consultant, environmental awareness, sustainable development, carbon foot printing, green building, sustainable energy and writing (Jose 1934).

Good understanding of moral decision making and human values is expected to impact heavily in technology industry. Many experiments on classical thought which were once studied in the classroom by students taking philosophy 101 will once become the everyday reality for technological workers in laboratories of silicon and open-plan offices. Moral philosophy is most likely to become one of the major industrial sectors. Engineers have been assigned the task of providing solutions to some real world problems and coding the solutions into software format. In the field of moral philosophy, providing a solution to some old problems increases the possibility of one day coming up with the artificial general intelligence. Program concepts in the AGI such as morality, goodness and benevolence are expected to be exhibited by the engineers. The invention of AGI possess a very adverse and extensional risk to the environment; the solar system, therefore, depends mostly on engineers’ answer (Mark, 1934).To be able to get the exact meaning of “human”, questions based on efficiency, goodness, comparison, cost, standard and belonging should be asked and researched. Humanism takes a new form when people reflect closely on the both meanings of future civilizations and life. Today, engineers rarely use paper and pen hence the iron ring does not play the role it once played (Jose 1934).

Question 1

The author has based his arguments on real life situations and conditions that mostly matters to readers so as to engage the reader. For instance, he says that our day to day experiences are good evidence for the rate of change such changes from transcontinental flight’s grant feats, mundane tasks such as toilet flushing and accessing the knowledge of the world using the pocket smartphones. The writing style that has motivated the author to use the world truism instead of and between technical and exponential is expository writing. He wanted to pass the message that: the technology is changing in logical sequence and order.

Question 2

Leaving the readers in suspense has also helped the author engage the readers in the first paragraph. He has just described the pace from transcontinental flights’ grant feats to the use of pocket smartphones leaving the detailed explanation on how the two have impacted on the changes and what can happen after the use of smartphones. This leaves the reader in suspense on what will come after the use of smartphones.

Question 3

Through education and training, we obtain proper intellectual tools which help us to transform the social environment positively. The tools also help us to come up with enterprises which can change ourselves, others and the world as a whole. The tools too, help us to establish changes that can be only better human existence. This makes us active participants in the social environment. We also use our intellectual tools to solve social environment problems such as conflicts and inequality hence becoming passive participants.

Question 4

The landscape described in paragraph one is not conducive to human existence. The crucial role for initiating a change in the environment is left to be done by the engineers alone. Everybody in the society should be involved in providing solutions to environmental problems so that the changes can occur at a faster rate.

It is engineers who are creating this landscape. Our ecological era might be dubbed due to the unwillingness of the engineers who have been assigned the role of setting up the scene at this stage. The future generations of archaeologists can identify this by using methods such as carbon dating to know a particular time that a particular era was into existence.

The only problem with the education of engineers is that they are not equipped with the right intellectual tools that are essential in initiating changes that can transform the environment to the positive direction hence raising their well being and that of the others and the real world as a whole.

Questions of virtues, beauty, justice and value traditionally belong to the academic discipline of religion. Architectural and building engineers should observe the above questions and answer them intellectually so as to improve their safety and that of the others. That is what the iron ring used to represent before its use was opposed.

Architectural engineering deals with structural designs for buildings and other physical structures that shelter the human beings. If real and intellectual fusion is not observed, then the structures designed may be a serious risk in the society hence threatening human safety. To ensure human safety, the fusion should be taken into account by the engineers while doing their job.

The message conveyed by this paragraph is that, engineers should take the crucial role of initiating changes in the environment as theirs to work hard without looking back so as to invent possible engineering materials and methods that can help transform the Earth and its participants to higher levels.

Nobler ends that should be achieved by building and architectural engineers are: coming up with inventions that are of greater efficiency, which are of material progress and which would accelerate the pace of economic development. Innovation, in this case, becomes the end goal, and the world benefits much from it.

The curriculum will help the engineers to understand human values so as to be able to make decisions that will change the technology industry (Mark, 1934).

This statement means that, if the skills and knowledge, obtained from the experiments done in the class of philosophy 101, are bought together, then they can impact a tremendous change in the social environment since they represent the real life situation for technological industries in open-plan offices and silicon labs.

Engineers should be called upon to provide solutions on how to change the trolley problem into vehicle control software so that everybody in the society may contribute to the technological progress hence the transformation of the social society to avoid loading the engineers with the important role of transforming the society.

• Reliance on the engineers alone to provide program concepts that are required while addressing the problem of the trolley

Virtual knowledge may interfere with the questions of epistemology and the nature of reality by inventing artificial general intelligence, AGI, which can perform tasks more effectively and efficiently than the human being. Even though this requires solutions of the old problems hence difficult to invent, it can interfere with questions of epistemology and the nature of the realty.

Virtual reality might lead to the establishment of improved designs and artifacts by architectural and building engineers. General artificial intelligence under virtual reality can help both building and architectural engineers to develop extra skills on the designs and quality of the physical structures they establish in the society hence increasing the safety of the human existence in the society.

Engineers can reduce the threat posed by the Artificial General Intelligence by converging to the best answer after deliberating on the issue of the solar system so as to avoid posting an adverse change in the world (Mark, 1934).Engineers too should think critically and clearly about what it means by the term “human” to avoid initiating changes that are not advantageous to the human existence.

To be able to appreciate the meaning of the word human, engineers must change their thinking by determining whether the change they want to initiate more efficient, how much it will cost and how will it be good in the social environment. They should also consider the targets of the changes and the standards that the changes will cause before they initiate them.

Question 20

The author is optimistic about the future. He claims that technological advances may instill into engineering more humanism since building, and architectural engineers may develop more skills that can transform the world and bring about intellectuality and economic growth hence improving the safety of the humans.
