Solving Information literacy problem among university students

Information literacy involves; the knowledge and competencies that an informed individual ought to possess in order to participate intelligently and actively in solving problems in his society (Eisenberg, Lowe & Spitzer, 2004). Today, most people are not well equipped with this literacy and therefore they are unable to solve real life problems regardless of their higher education (Eisenberg, 2008). This project will address the issue of information illiteracy among students and how it can be solved by introducing information related programs/units that address the issue in the curriculum.

Objectives of the additional unit

  1. To have students demonstrate their ability to utilize the current information technology in education, areas of work and professional life.

  2. To have students demonstrate their ability to adapt, understand and evaluate the changing trends in the information world.

  3. To have students demonstrate their ability to understand the format, location, form and methods of accessing information resources like the social networks resources.

  4. To have students demonstrate their ability to utilize relevant IT based tools in critical evaluation and to conduct research in a professional way.

  5. To have students demonstrate their ability to understand the way information is produced and socially situated.

Rationale

Information literacy is of great essence in today’s life and it enables the learner to acquire problem solving skills, which makes him or her become a problem solver as opposed to being part of the problem. In education, information literacy does not call for additional units only, but also a new conceptualization of the curricula in terms of information (Eisenberg, Lowe & Spitzer, 2004). It will be assumed that by giving adequate information skills, students will show considerable improvements in other subjects especially the research based ones and those which require problem solving (Miller, Chabot & Messina, 2009).

Methodology

In this project, second year students will be involved whereby they will be taken through the units of information literacy alongside other regular subjects. This will be essential in assessing whether this information literacy affects performance in other units of study. After every unit, assessment will be done to make sure that students understand the concepts. The results of the assessment will be used in making conclusions and recommendations. After this, there will be a questionnaire for the students to fill regarding the skills acquired. There will also be a questionnaire for tutors on the changes they may have noticed on the performance of students in other subjects. The responses will also be used to draw conclusions and recommendations for the project.
