Definition: Obesity is a disease process that results from excessive accumulation of body parts due to several factors food intake, genetic, and physical inactivity. Obesity is the major risk factor contributing to illness and death and majorly associated with osteoarthritis, diabetes, and hypertension. Although there are several genetic and hormonal effects on the weight of the body, obesity often occurs when people consume more calories than they can burn through their daily activities and exercise. As a result, the body stores the excess calories in form of fats.

Background: In Saudi Arabia, obesity is becoming one of the most health common problems to both adults and children irrespective of their health. Epidemiological studies show that more than one quarter of Saudi Arabians have obesity while overweight affecting one-third of the population. Currently, the country is experiencing transitions associated with epidemiological and demographics with advancement in nutrition. Moreover, Saudi Arabia underwent through deep and rapid changes associated with lifestyles and economic situations. Due to time constraints, lifestyle, and convenience, the country experienced growth in fast food industry, which replaced traditional foods.

Aim: The aim of the leading education is to assist the nursing staff in preventing and reducing obesity in Saudi Arabia

Driving forces


According to the WHO statistics, there are about 1.6 billion adults globally suffering from obesity globally. In the United States, between 2011 and 2012, a third of the adults were obese with women forming the greatest percentage. The simultaneous increment in the obesity in almost all the states seem to be driven by the global changes in the food system that focuses on processed, affordable, and marketed food. With projections of the WHO, about 1.6 billion would be overweight while 700 million obese. The passive consumption of energy that leads to obesity is predictable. CDC recommends limiting of unhealthy food, increasing physical activity, and adequate equipping the practitioners with knowledge on obesity.


In study undertaken in 2007 by the National Nutrition Survey revealed that the prevalence of obesity in Saudi Arabia was 14% and 23.6% among men and women respectively. About 83% of the Saudi men and women eat fast food. Obesity levels continued to increase due to high-fat diets, hypertension rates, and declined physical exercise. Traditionally, many women stay at home, which limit their chances of furthering their physical activity. In 2008, obesity deaths reached 28.6% and 39.1% in Saudi Arabia, which compelled the Ministry of Health to focus on training the nurses to deal with such cases.

Primary research

The study gathered resources from various sources including publications from the WHO, Centre for Disease Control, news platforms such as Arab News, and the United States National Library of Medicine. Furthermore, the study analyzed data from the Saudi guidelines and Policy, application of nursing education in prevention and reduction of obesity, and major causes of obesity in Saudi. Based on the findings, some papers were on obesity but focused on international level while others were narrowed to the Saudi Arabian context.

Political: the Saudi Arabia authority greatly supports the prevention and reduction of obesity within the country. To ensure effectiveness in the process, there is changing of the leaders several times. Combination of the authority and changing of the leaders ensures effectiveness and commitment in reducing obesity within the Kingdom.

Economic: the Saudi Arabia government channel huge financial support to the Ministry of Health to support prevention and reduction of obesity. The Saudi Arabian Health Ministry receives the highest budget in the state, which makes it easy to meet various prevention and reduction strategies for obesity.

Sociological: interaction and socialization challenges for people with obesity make it easy for them to seek treatment and advice from the trained nurses. There is insufficient knowledge among the nurses on ways of controlling obesity. Nurses exhibit negative behaviour towards the implementation of the policies.

Technology: advance technology ensures that fast foods have the necessary requirements for the body. Hospitals in Saudi Arabia uses advanced technology that ensures effective implementation and monitoring of prevention and control strategies. Increased used of Smartphone applications such as BMI PLA PLA and iFit for measuring body activity rates

Environment: health care acquired infections especially the nurses could affect the implementation of control mechanisms and increased medical wastes generated from the hospitals might have negative impacts on the environment.

Legal: Saudi Arabia has effective policies and guidelines for implementing new strategies for prevention and reduction of health problems. The country lacks policies for controlling the fast foods.

Strength: Saudi Arabia enjoys readily available policies and guidelines for managing various diseases. The authority, MOH, receives higher financial budget and logistic support from the central government. Highly competent and committed nurses in nurses ensure achievement of the results.

Weaknesses: the nurses lack adequate knowledge of handling cases associated with obesity. The negative behaviour of the nurses in implementing the obesity prevention and reduction strategies and high workload associated with implementation might affect negatively the whole process. Training the nurses is very costly; it requires adequate timeline to cover the needed practices

Opportunity: implantation could reduce obesity levels and ensure healthy nation. The practice presents new method of controlling the problem and imparts the knowledge on the nurses, which ensures reduced obesity levels. Special budget for controlling the level of obesity within the country and high technological improvement also contributes in effective obesity management.

Threats: Obesity has similar symptom like other health complications such as overweight. Inadequate level of awareness could impact negatively the implementation. Changing the leaders each month could disorient the implementation of the obesity prevention and reduction mechanisms. Through educating the nurse and ensuring they have adequate skills, many obesity consultants and health institutions are likely to emerge without necessary skills of handling the situation.

Leading with care: involves having essential personal qualities within the healthcare, adequate understanding of the unique qualities and provision of safe environment for effective performance.

Evaluating information: it involves seeking out various information for generation of ideas and having plans of making the improvement effective to meet the needs of the obese.

Connecting our service: it requires understanding of the manner in which the healthcare services fit together and interaction between people, teams, and health sector interconnection

Sharing the vision: it requires communicating vision that compels practitioners for the future in manner that makes it feel exciting and achievable

Engaging the team: it involves ensuring that individuals’ contributions of ideas are valued for the delivery of outcomes and continuous improvement in services offered

Holding to account: it involves agreeing on clear performing goals and indicators of quality and ensuring adequate support to the individuals and teams so that they take responsibility for their results

Developing capability: building capability involves enabling people to meet the future challenges and applying experience as the learning basis and acting as role model for personal development

Influencing for results: it involves making decision on the positive impact on other individuals and ensuring adequate relationship that recognizes the other people’s passion and concerns

Teaching and learning strategies

Field trip method involves leaving the normal area of learning to pursue experimental learning opportunities such as asking the nurses their experience on obesity management and collection of relevant information from the obese clients.

Oral presentation involves asking the nurses to make both formal and informal presentation using various materials on the information collected on obesity. As a teaching strategy, oral presentation is effective in demonstrating some of the underlying factors in obesity management.

Activity learning method involves dividing the nurses into groups and delegating them responsibilities associated with obesity management, trends, and distribution across the KSA. This method ensures effective participation and inclusivity in the learning process.

Debate allows the nurses to present their views, both opposing and proposers, on the effective management of obesity in the KSA and proper learning strategy that would ensure inclusivity.

Collaborative learning method allows involves allowing the nurses to share the skills, resources, and expertise on the matters associated with obesity management. This method is important as it allows teamwork among the participants.

Mentoring method involves provision of one-on-one advice to the nurses with an aim of offering them support to explore effective issues associated with obesity in the KSA. Mentoring is important as it ensures that all the participants do what is required throughout the training.

Learning theories

Bloom’s Taxonomic theory aims to promote higher forms of thinking in education. It involves analysis and evaluation of the concept, process, principles, and procedures instead of just focusing on the rote learning which involves remembering the facts. The theory is important in designing education, training, and learning various processes. The three domains of learning include cognitive, affective, and psychomotor which involves the mental skills, growth in the emotional areas, and the physical skills respectively. Cognitive domain involves the knowledge and adequate development of the intellectual skills including recalling and recognizing facts. Affective domain provides details for assessment of framework meant to teach, train, assess, and evaluate the teaching effectiveness.

According to Behaviorist Theory, the behavior of the learners usually results from conditioned response to an external stimulus. The classical conditioning theories note that individuals tend to act without consideration of cognizance-responses seem to be automatic. With the operant conditioning, there is a great connection decision making and behavior to the consequence; however, the learners still base their decisions on reinforcement with the actions reflecting the learnt behavior. According to the theory, learners do nothing unless that which they are conditioned to do. Through the conditioned stimuli or reinforcement, the tutor detaches the required behavior from the initial necessity. The learners are normally conditioned to response in line with what the teachers consider appropriate; however, the learners do not necessarily understand the reasons behind the behavior.


Obesity is one of the health issues affecting many Saudi Arabians especially with the change in their lifestyle with people focusing on fast foods, which in most cases have unbalanced calories contents. The paper aimed to undertake a learning education on the nursing staff within Saudi Arabia with an aim of preventing and reducing the level of obesity. Currently, there are few nurses with knowledge on the management of obesity in the KSA. Through learning, the nurses will imparted with the knowledge on obesity which would in turn assist in effective manage. With the skills and knowledge acquired during training, the nurses would be in a position of managing obesity and spreading the required practices among the untrained nurses. Most Saudis eat junks with lots of calories contents; hence, the training will assist in briging to the attention of the Saudis the changes associated with obesity. By involving the nurses in the learning process, there would effective development of the strategies for prevention and reduction of obesity


Obesity is disease that affects many Saudi Arabians due to increased accumulation of fats from the intake of excess calories. Obesity contributes to various risks that contribute to different forms of diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and to some extent death.

The driving forces for obesity both internationally and nationally are the same; however, there are differences in the level of commitment in ensuring the achievement of desired results. Saudi Arabian government through the Ministry of Health has commitment towards reducing the obesity levels. This is achievable through training the nurses and ensuring adequate monitoring.

Based on the PESTEL analysis, the government has commitment to offering quality health and integration of current technology to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of the healthcare services provided to the customers. However, implementation of nursing training is costly, which to some extent makes it economically challenging but socially important for the Saudi Arabians.

To ensure effective learning for the nurses and increasing the level of awareness on the challenges associated with obesity, the plan focused on the Bloom’s Taxonomic Theory and Behaviourism Theory, which aims to promote higher forms of thinking in education and ensuring that teachers learn methods of teaching through undergoing through effective methods of teaching respectively.
