Proposal Idea

Team building focuses mostly on enhancing communication, decision making and improving coordination (Midura and Donald 27). The means to approach these skills differs due to different activities used. We came up with an idea of minefield as our team building activity. The game objective is to have a person travel through the minefield with the help of partners. The outcome of the activity was to help the group develop skills in trust, communication and planning.

Preparation for the activity

We started by creating a playing area which was 10ft by 10ft square. This was done using a rope. On the side and finish ends of the playing area, doors were created using strips of tape. The second step involved putting obstacles in the playing area. Approximately 30 obstacles were to be placed which were to define the level of difficulty in the activity. The activities of arranging the minefield were shared as follows with each of the team member participating.

After the minefield was complete, each of the team members was supposed to pair up and stand at the start of the square playing area. The members in each pair were supposed to work together and independent of other team partners. When travelling through the mine, eyes were supposed to be closed and depend on the guidance of the partner. The partner had to guide through verbal directions to help in avoiding the obstacles. When one of the partners makes to the other side of the minefield, the other partner takes turn. Rules were spelt out that there should be no running, no one was to be allowed in the playing area with eyes open and multiple players can be in the mine field. If any of the partners touched the mines, they were to start again and any violation of the rule was attached to a penalty.

The team agreed on allocating the tasks as shown above. The process of assigning the tasks faced several barriers. Some of the team members felt that they were given more workload than others. There was also complains that the time allocated to some of the tasks and roles was not sufficient. There were cases of lack of cooperation and poor dedication during the beginning. To solve this, the group leader started by making sure that every member was aware of the task allocated. Those who perceived that there tasks were more demanding were assured of support in case they fell behind the schedule. The team was explained that in case there is insufficient time, there was a possibility for extra time. Cooperation was solved through discussing it and explaining to the members the importance of collaboration. This was done through understanding that without recognising the problem, it would be hard to solve it. Members were also explained the need for being dedicated to the team activities for a common objective. The less dedicated members were encouraged on their activities and at last there was a good team environment.

Motivating, encouraging and rewarding

As a team, motivation encouragement and rewarding is vital to attaining the goal (Dyer & Dyer 28). The team used several methods to make sure it was able to be motivated and encouraged in attaining the goal. One of the methods used was discussing the benefits of success. The team was motivated regularly by discussing the importance of succeeding in their activities. The team was also kept excited by doing the games and exercise which members enjoyed most. The goals set on each of the team member were realistic. This was meant to encourage the team in goals which they could easily reach. Each of the teammate participated in a friendly competition. The team had created a competitive environment which members were supposed to engage in. Communication and constant feedback among the members was of paramount interests. Good communication enabled each member to participate in their tasks with a sense of involvement. At the end of each role assigned to team, member, the whole team celebrated the results. At the end, we were able to come up with the minefield.

Reflection

As team work progressed we were able to achieve our goals. The mine field was completed in time and the activity began within the schedule. The team members were able to exhibit different leadership skills during the activity. The leadership skills exhibited were; communication skills, liaison skills, expertise, background and team player. During the team work, I was able to use leadership skills which helped in attaining the team target on time. My communication skills helped me to listen to others effectively, communicate and give feedback. This quality enabled me to coordinate tasks within the team.

The other skill I used was liaison. Liaison involved networking with team members, accountability and responsibility (Dyer & Dyer 32). Through this, I was able to share the team success and also be accountable to any failure experienced. Despite having these leadership skills, I found that I lacked expertise in some tasks. For example, I was not good in designing the minefield though some of the members were expertise in making it and innovating. An effective leader should possess communication skills, liaison skills, expertise, decisions making skills, delegating skills, motivating skills and be a team player. During the team work, the leadership skills which proved to be very important were liaison, communication skills and expertise. Despite this, the team was poor in expertise and background as only a few members had them. There was also poor coordination at the begging of the task which was eliminated as the tasks progressed. By looking at the way in which we worked as a team, a lot of benefits can be accrued from effective team work. Working as a team helps in developing leadership skills such as communication, decision making, delegating, problem solving, motivating and cooperation. Team work enables the members to develop a common bond which makes it possible for them to work toward a specific goal.
