Some of the historical developments such as the ministering angel ethic and the tyranny of niceness have impacted the current moral and ethical frameworks of the nursing profession. This in turn affects the contemporary nursing practice. The tyranny of niceness for instance, affects the nurse’s ability to be heard in the work place when the patient is at stake. It insists on the sensibility of a nurse being nice, avoiding conflict and backing off during a situation. The ministering angel on the other hand portrays nurses as nuns who should uphold the value of self sacrifice. Nurses are therefore not expected to complain even when they are overworked (Chiarella & McInnes 2008). The effects of these morals lead to the feeling of powerlessness and dissatisfaction in the workplace and a possible diminished patient care.
Leadership focuses with creating long term vision and enabling people towards change. In nursing, leadership and responsiveness involves developing new skills or taking new roles in order to meet the changing needs of the service (Daft & Pirola-Merlo 2009). To be responsive, leaders should be self motivated to improve the health service performance and thereby make a difference in other people’s health and the quality of life. They should also have confidence in achieving the best results and overcoming obstacles (McKenzie and Manely 2011). Similarly they should involve the relevant staff in co-creating the set vision and work collaboratively as a team to achieve the desired change. In conclusion, as leaders they should set the direction by showing commitment to improving service performance and determination to achieve positive outcomes.
