Transformational versus servant leadership: a difference in leader focus»

The primary difference between transformational leadership and servant leadership is the focus of the leader. The transformational leader’s focus is directed toward the organization, and his or her behavior builds follower commitment toward organizational objectives, while the servant leader’s focus is on the followers, and the achievement of organizational objectives is a subordinate outcome. The extent to which the leader is able to shift the primary focus of leadership from the organization to the follower is the distinguishing factor in classifying leaders as either transformational or servant leaders.


The readability of this article is excellent; the authors have utilized various variables of article readability. For example, when it comes to paragraphing as one of the variables of article readability, the authors have set the paragraphs of the article in such a way that a set of related points are grouped into one paragraph and another paragraph marks the start of another thinking point. The lengths of paragraphs are almost the same; this is also very important because the readers cannot have a sudden surge or conflicting information absorption due to the irregularities lengths of in paragraphs. The authors also utilized other variables such as bulleting, text bolding and italizing, and text fond sizes among others, which make the article readable.

Practical application

Servant leadership and transformation leadership are two major forms of leadership that common in our lives today and they vary according to the different places and situations that we happen to find ourselves in; that is, whether we are in a school, church, or office environment. Transformation leadership is widely applied in various organizations because it is based mostly upon leadership in an organization that can lead to the achievement of the main aims or objectives that organization has targets. On the other hand, servant leadership, mostly finds its application in learning institution because it focuses on the wellbeing of their followers or individuals who have belief in them as leaders. Transformation leadership is mainly based upon individuals developing a sense of togetherness, that is, it is not based on self-interest. For example, in a company employees are urged to work together as a unit and thus the objectives of the specific company are met (Bass, 1990).

Type and robustness of research

The type of research in this article is secondary because it is based on previous research reports. The robustness of this research may reflect the recent emphasis by a number of organizations on some significant areas connected to leadership. These areas deal with inspiring individuals, assuming the position of a role model by behaving in a good manner, motivating of individuals by paying attention to their needs and lastly are intellectual in order to come up with innovations/solutions to problems. This is aimed towards enabling individuals to help others rather than having interest in proceeding alone in life whether financially and morally among others. Although they are different, transformational leadership and servant leadership offer the conceptual framework for dynamic leadership.

Reflective comments

The aim of the article according to my view is to give an insight on the essence of a virtue such as leadership and explain that there are various types of leadership. The knowledge on these characteristics enables individuals to examine and analyze the types of leaders that they have, whether at work, in church or even in the country. This will help because individuals will be able to know the expectations of the specific leader, that is, whether a transformation leader or a servant leader. Leadership is a hard task for individuals to carry out, thus, most leaders lose their initial purpose of becoming leaders. To be a leader, an individual should be able to combine attributes in servant leadership and those in transformation leadership. This ensures that goals or targets are attained without causing harm to individuals.
