Generation Y versus Generation Z

Examining the nature and variations between generations is beneficial in understanding the manner in which individuals in these generations reach and perpetuate decisions in different contexts. Ivanova and Smrikarov refer to generations as “cohorts of people who were born in a certain date range and share a general cultural experience of the world” (p.1). In addition, the cultural and social values where individuals in a certain generation grow up coupled with the exposure to different technologies available to them as they grow up influence their values and behavioural patterns (Pittman 41). In this essay, the author presents analyses comparing the nature of generation Y to and with generation Z in terms of the technological and social factors affecting them.

Concerning their similarities, both Generation Y and Generation Z are techno savvy due to massive exposure to ever-changing and rapid technological advancements. Additionally, both generations share similar societal experiences. For instance, both generations were brought up in a society with widespread instances of single parenthood unlike majority of their predecessor generations (Pittman 47-48). These two generations have also been exposed to increasing trends of negative societal incidences such as violence, acts of terrorism, pornography, alcohol, and drug abuse. Pittman (47) argued that these two generations have become increasingly abrasive and have a higher level of disrespect of others and self as commonly exhibited.

In terms of differences, individuals in generation Y and generation Z are different on various aspects. For instance, whereas both generations are exposed to and are technologically apt, generation Y matured during the digital revolution (McArthur 52). However, Generation Z individuals were born into a pre-existing digital world and technology has always been part of their lives and upbringing (Matthews 48). Consequently, Generation Y individuals embraced digital technologies whereas those in Generation Z cannot live without digital technologies. Generation Y’s continued use of digital technologies has rendered them better at multitasking and they expect instant reward and feedback (Hewlett, Sherbin and Sumberg 74). However, Generation Z individuals are faster thinkers and exhibit high levels of impatience when it comes to getting results. Due to their upbringing, Generation Z’s have become the neo conservatives and value family, are more self-controlled and are a diverse and global generation comprising vaster mix of backgrounds comprising diverse ideas and experiences (Wellner 62). Conversely, Generation Y values choice, scrutiny, speed, collaboration, innovation, customisation, speed and integrity (Williams and Page 8).

Undoubtedly, both Generation Y and Generation Z are technologically apt individuals with immense exposure to numerous societal vices. However, Generation Y individuals adopted technology use whereas their Generation Z counterparts were born into a technologically advanced world with digital technologies being central to their lives. Finally, Generation Z’s value family more, are more self-controlled and are a diverse and global generation with diverse ideas and experiences. In contrast, Generation Y values choice, scrutiny, speed, collaboration, innovation, customisation, speed and integrity. In conclusion, both Generation Y and Generation Z individuals show numerous similarities and variations in terms of upbringing, societal values and personal traits.
