Interviewee Selection

Introduction

The process of selecting the right candidates for a particular job is tiring and time-consuming. It is, therefore, important to narrow the list of the applicants, and this is done through a proper review of the resume. The aim of reviewing is to get rid of the candidates whose resumes don’t meet the minimum requirements of the job. The process of reviewing involves the use of job description as a guide to select the correct candidate. Examples of the factors to check include education level and the minimum experience. The information which is not related to the job can be ignored so that the most important parts are focused on. It is also important to review the resumes more than once to ensure that something important is not overlooked. At Macquarie University, there is a vacancy for marketing assistant and three candidates applied for the job. The role of a marketing assistant is to assist the company’s marketing department to promote the sales of the goods and services. Other main duties of the marketing assistant include organizing and collection of information which relates to the market, organizing meetings and scheduling conferences among many other functions.

Justification

One of the applicants is Christine Charlmers, who graduated from the University of Macquarie with a Bachelor’s degree of Art in communication. She acquired excellent communication skills which are a requirement for a marketing job. She is currently an employee at Foodland, Berry Hill as a check out operator. She has an experience of retailing because she worked as a retail assistant before she joined her current career. In both careers, she is responsible for assisting the customers and cashing. Her resume looks good and neat, but it is too wordy as the candidate used full sentences. A good resume should be fragmented so that the employer can go through it quickly. She also focused mainly on career history instead of skills and competencies. She organized her resume well because she began with her education since she a fresher candidate and her experiences are few.

The other candidate is Jason Hurley, who did Business Management at the University of Sydney, and he also learned about the business dissertation. In his study, he acquired skills of data analysis, how to interpret statistical data and this assisted him to gain a better understanding of marketing. He worked as a marketing assistant at Nation1 Advertising Agency and also as a student brand manager at The Campus Group, USYD. His resume begins with an objective which describes what he wants to achieve once employed. It is advisable that one writes a profile summary instead of an objective because an objective is a candidate focused instead and this does not attract the attention of the reader. However, his resume is well organized with adequate descriptions of the skills that he has on marketing, and this makes his flow, but referees are missing. He also used bullets to list his points which simplify the work for the reader to identify what is in the job description.

The other applicant is Mary Ferguson, who did a bachelor’s degree in marketing at the University of New South Whales. She is currently working as a volunteer in Smithville children’s hospital where her responsibilities include: assisting in planning and organizing fundraising project events, event management, and outsourcing just to mention some few. She was interned at Ideas Marketing where she attended several meetings and organized promotions in the supermarket. The resume is easy to read and well organized with clearly written sub-headings. She began her resume with a brief summary which captures her experiences, education, and skills. This is a good resume because it attracts the attention of the reader from the start. She also fragmented her resume with a description of her career history, and she used a variety of action verbs.

From the resumes above, Jason Hurley and Mary Ferguson are qualifying for an interview because their resumes are good. This is because their qualifications meet the minimum requirements of the job. Jason did a course in business management which is relevant in the field of study. He is also working as a marketing assistance which has built his experience in the marketing environment. As the assistant marketer at Nation1 Advertising Agency, he managed teams and ensured that work is completed on time and also providing good recommendations on how to improve. This is one of the key requirements in marketing career because the market is changing and good strategies are needed. Mary Ferguson also studied marketing, and this enabled her to acquire some marketing skills. Although she still a student, she has acquired some relevant skills from her internship and the volunteer career. The work of an assistant marketer is to assist in planning and coordinate events, and that is what she is doing in Smithville Hospital.

Conclusion

From the two candidates who qualified for the interview, Mary Ferguson is the most appropriate candidate for the job. This is because she has appealing career traits despite the fact that Jason has more experience than her. In his resume, the titles are not clear unless one becomes careful, you cannot see them. This portrays his inability to produce quality work. The passion in her to do marketing job is demonstrate by her volunteer career at Smithville Children’s Hospital. This shows that she can do her work well even if the material motivation is lacking. Also, she has listed her referees in her resume that can be delved into for more information about Mary. The referees can also suggest a person who knows the candidate well. Her resume is also free from grammatical errors, and this shows the diligence of the candidate, and this illustrates that he can produce high-quality work.
