This research proposal outlines the way and how 3D printer impact businesses in the current economic and social dynamic environment (Harrington, 2013). This proposal will examine the main impacts surrounding 3D printing technology, Identifying global responses and investigating what the global business world is doing to adopt this kind of technology in their business operations. The methodology behind this proposal will involve reading and locating the current literature from advanced academic reports, global government bodies, and conversational organizations (Hood-Daniel & Kelly, 2011).

Research Proposal Objectives

The objective of this research proposal is to evaluate on how and ways in which 3D printer impact on the business and how 3D printing increases the company’s market scope by reaching and satisfying more business customers (Griffin, 2013).


Literature Review

Research into the impact of 3D printer has been previously conducted and documented. Various documented literature have delved into the positive and the negative impacts which have been brought about by emergence of 3D printing. Reviews on a scope of literature show how 3D printing technologies have been rapidly been becoming a part of us and how it is spreading and gaining popularity in the commercial sector. Reviews are carried out on the social impact the technology will bring about, since it marks the beginning of an era of creation where every individual is capable of creating, experimenting and sharing of ideas via the internet. Literature reviews also exposes the influence which 3D printing is having on lighting and fashion design, vehicle and craft industries, creation of musical instruments, and even in the manufacture of arms and weapons. Literature reviews seek to explain the impact of the technology on employment rates, nature, pollution, and other social issues. Literature on how 3D printing technologies affect the supply chain are also reviewed (Evans, 2012).

Data Validation and Experimental Investigation

Data validation and experimental investigation will involve the assessment of the findings from the literature review in the verge of ascertaining the findings stated by previous researchers. The process is undertaken through field studies and conducting of experiments pertaining each and every impact reported on the literature review. New findings from own research are the compared to the initial results discovered during the literature review. Experimental research will involve targeting specific areas of the research in order to have the first hand results on the impacts of 3D printing in business. This may involve the installation of a 3D printer in new environments and, after a deploying its functions for a while, the accompanying effects brought about by the technology’s existence are documented. Information from the various sources pertaining the impact of 3D printing on the supply chain is also assessed by comparing the supply chains of various organizations, those using the technology and who are using the traditional supply chain (Bassoli, Gatto, Luliano & Violante, 1995).


The literature review of this research proposal will gather the required and relevant information from books, 3D printing Journals and Information from previous research done on this particular subject. Online sources from search engines will always be used this is because it enables us get current and up to information on the research topic. The review of literature will focus on impact of 3D printer in general to business organizations and also highlight ways in which 3D printer has affected the way businesses operate (Barnatt, 2013).


Research Methodology

The study design is appropriate as the subject matter of the study will be used with the aim of finding the possible solution to the problem of the study (Winnan, 2013). The researchers will conduct a survey; the study population will be 25 business organizations that are currently using 3D printer technology in their operations. The researchers through the survey study will be able to identify the social significance and benefits of the problem of study to citizens and the possible efforts to be utilized in reducing the effects of 3D printing on the citizens’ life styles (Lipson &Kurman, 2013).
Also the study will be used with actual experience to 1- 3 business organizations that are currently using 3D printer technology in their operations to compare the possible solution to the problem of the study.
