Importance of Physical Activity in Adolescence

Adolescence is considered to be one of the most active age group in human life. They are also quite vulnerable to many diseases. Traditionally exercises were prescribed as a treatment for some chronic ailments that affected adolescents such as cystic fibrosis, asthma, and insulin-dependent diabetes. When physical activity is held regularly it improves health and reduces the chances of developing chronic diseases such as hypertension, osteoporosis, diabetes, overweight and some other types of cancer (Ayers, 2010). In addition, physical activity plays a major role in the development of psychological well-being of adolescents such as making them to gain more self confidence and higher self esteem.When adolescents engage in physical activities, some of the benefits are realized much later in development stages. They are likely to experience a longer life expectancy when they are adults because physical activity promotes health by enhancing appropriate circulation of blood in their bodies. Some conditions such as diabetes that are triggered by the lack of physical exercises among the adolescents are likely to persist into their adulthood.

According to the American Heart Association, adolescents are recommended to participate in sixty minutes of active or moderate exercises everyday. According to research, the level of physical activity in adolescents has reduced dramatically, compared to what to it used to be in the past. This is mainly attributed to the introduction of televisions, computers, and internet (Ayers, 2010). For healthy living, and to reduce the chances of getting the listed chronic diseases, it is paramount for teachers, parents, or guardians to encourage adolescents to participate in physical activities daily. They should also be informed of the risks involved in physical inactivity and how it can affect them in future.
