Diversity in Early Childhood Education

The population of people in the environment where I work is increasingly becoming culturally and linguistically diverse. As a result, various issues revolving around diversity have emerged in my area of practice as an early childhood educator. One of the issues that I have identified to be a major challenge involves linguistic diversity within the early childhood classroom. A number of children brought to school are used to communicating using their home or native languages. Linguistic diversity within the classroom is often regarded as liability rather than a resource. Given the fact that the basic language of instruction in our school is English, children whose native language is not English are disadvantaged. Consequently, negative attitudes are conveyed towards children who are non-English speakers. This in turn creates difficulties for these children to master English as their second language or benefit from the curriculum.

Linguistic diversity within the classroom poses a great challenge when it comes to implementing our programs and the overall concepts of the curriculum. When using English as the main language of instruction, children who are non-English speakers are unable to relate to learning activities. As a result, these children fall behind and fail to exhibit progress in their learning. In order to promote social justice and equality, it is essential for educators to acknowledge, appreciate and be sensitive towards linguistic diversity (Murphy, 2011). One action that I would take in order to address this challenge, is to introduce programs that provide a platform whereby children who are non-English speakers can learn English as their second language. Moreover, I would employ pedagogical approaches that are leaner-centered in order to meet the specific needs of each student.
