The Pros and Cons of Study Abroad: Personal Development.

An oversea experience is beneficial for all students despite all problems because it helps them discover who they are, and what they want (Ungar, 2016). First of all, some students do not to live with any guardian in their life, so studying abroad helps them gain more independence when they find themselves in a new foreign environment on their own with no parents or a family member. When they understand that they are away from any kind of direct support, they become curious and thrilled to discover the aspects of a new country and its people. Unfortunately, some students do not know to live with no guardian or instructor in their life, so they sometimes need some private space to grow up. This kind of independence helps students to earn more understanding about themselves and their needs and tendencies. Independence makes them more mature and wise in their life (“International Student Company”, 2016). Due to many studies, study abroad is linked with personal development for the students who study abroad. It is a psychological trait and tendency that help students direct their feelings for those who are need at a proper time and pace. It increases the ability of an individual to understand the point of view and feelings of others, and this leads them to separate selves from others to “form a self-identity and promotes well-being.” Studying abroad experience is also related to the happiness of achieving self-realization, growth, development and experiential development. Such an experience can enhance one’s relations with self and others, and it can also deepen and strengthen motivations and desires to build new skills in different activities that improve personal interests and intellect. Any person who highly realizes his or her personal pursuits is considered the happiest individuals. Briefly, happiness is associated with personal growth and development (Marshall, 2015). Furthermore, studying abroad experience leads students practice non-prejudice traits, which is the ability of freeing oneself from the classifying people into groups based on their gender, race, religion and nationality, because those students face multi-cultural and international experiences with people coming from different places combined with unique traditions and mentalities (Marshall, 2015). Briefly, studying abroad is related to problem-solving skills because one is alone on his/her own in a foreign country; consequently, she/ he finds himself or herself in a new situation with new problems and difficulties. In this way, being on their own in new place forces students to test their ability and to try to adapt with the current circumstances with new perspectives and solutions. These differences give the student an opportunity to discover him or herself in order to understand a different nation with open mind and heart (“International Student Company”, 2016).

Adopting to a new culture

Lee, Therriault, and Linderholm, (2012) studying abroad ensures multicultural experience operationalization as well as giving the student an opportunity to interact with foreign cultures population extensively. Compared to short visits or travel with superficial experience introduction when it comes to a new culture studying abroad offers both quantitatively and qualitatively varied multicultural experiences. Student who have studied abroad have increased desire in architecture, history, foreign language, art and travel. These interests are clear indicators of high esthetics valuation which form part of creativity in an individuals. Various research support the existence of greater creative performance among the multicultural exposed individuals. Further, cultural diverse individuals, demonstrate integrative and highly complex cultural representations that enhance creative thinking within a cultural diverse environment. Moreover, According to Costello, (2015) studying abroad is beneficial to the student. This is because as the student adopts to a new culture so does competence increases. Studying abroad is linked with globalization, internationalization, building transcultural competence, cross-cultural competence and intercultural competence. In his longitudinal study to find out effect of studying abroad with reference to intercultural competence, Salsbury, (2011) had a sample of 1,593 undergraduates of the Wabash National Study on Liberal Arts Education in 2006. The study gathered variables on the host college experiences, various pre-and pot-test measures in reference to the outcome of education and self-reported pre-college characteristics. Covariate adjustment methods and propensity score matching were both employed to provide the selection effect, college experiences, pre-college characteristics and the data clustered nature to objectively provide recommendation for future research and cross-validate findings. Using such rigorous analytics status, the study did find that studying abroad provide statistically significant positive impacts in regards to intercultural competence. This was concluded following the fact that studying abroad, influences student’s contact diversity.

This means that students experience new approaches of learning, teaching and doing assignments and homework. All these differences prepare students to know how to work with other people coming from different backgrounds. Thus, studying abroad is an opportunity that is added to both your academic achievements and work experience as well (Berdan, Goodman & Taylor GBS, 2016).United States Studying abroad gives the students a new perspective to acquire a new language along with its rules and skills. Acquiring a new language provides them with a different opportunity to get better job and work positions in life. Besides, learning a new language does not only support students cope with a new culture but also get to know new friends. These friends could guide them to easily find small jobs that help them gain new skills in the long track of challenge and struggle in the marketplace (Berdan, Goodman &Taylor, 2016). Also, many colleges and seminars are only provided by using the native language, so the student can take the advantage of this by learning it well and trying to practice it with the people who can help him learn faster and build new relations in order to nourish his life with healthy and enjoyable moments and experiences (Brewer, 2016). Recent studies report that the most proficient way to learn and acquire a new language is to use it as the babies learn it; moreover, taking courses in a second language provides an important benefit for the students who would like to greatly master it especially many courses and programs are taught in the native or spoken language of the new country. For this reason, mastering a new language is a proficient way that motivates students to study abroad for many years (Berdan, Goodman & Taylor GBS, 2016). For example, European University has a strong tendency to develop using more than one language on its campus; as a result, 98% of students and staff members use more than two languages. This international atmosphere immerses the students with a chance to explore the place where they study, discover its new culture and ways of life and help students gain an oversea experience. Studying and living abroad is a new gate that helps students develop language skills to drag them to global horizons and positions. This chance of learning, speaking and using it with natives on daily basis would be a great advantage in order to improve their employment techniques and strategies (“Top Five Employment Skills Provided Studying Abroad”, 2014). This right preparation of taking different classes using different language counts as a credit to attain an international degree. Besides, studying abroad would offer you a chance to study courses that are not available in the homeland universities. In this way, students find themselves learning new methods in an advanced way and discovering new learning systems of education.

Argument against studying abroad: Boredom and Homesickness.

On the other hand, many people oppose the idea that studying abroad as it seems a dream. They do not consider it an opportunity to travel and experience the world independently, but it is only a horrible illusion. Whenever you are taken away from your family and friends, you have to face a new world alone. For this reason, students should understand the pros of studying abroad before taking such a decision. It seems so terrific and disappointing if students do not know how to spend most of their time in a proper way. As times passes, they would know how to use their time in studying and having extra activities. Sooner, everything will be recovered (Brewer, 2016). Studying abroad can be complicated but thrilling and eye opening due to the challenges any student might face. One of the biggest challenges is homesickness that may create “anxiety and emotional distress”. These feelings usually originate from the difficulty to adapt to a new culture, feeling lonely and changing in the lifestyle. The student misses family gatherings and friends hanging out, and this feeling can be only rejected when the student tries to force himself or herself in the new community to have new friends and neighbors (Reddy, 2016). It is also thought that boredom and homesickness are as effective factors on students’ mood and psyche as the sense of disappointment of the place itself. Visiting a place for the first time has a very glamorous expectation in the mind of the students unless they discover huge differences between the new culture and their behavior and the home culture. Many students had dreamed of living in Paris, but they found it the opposite of what they were dreaming of. This actually keeps the students frustrated and depressed for a long time. Besides, the standards of living between two countries can be totally different. Living standards in India is not the same as in the United States (Brewer, 2016). Sometimes students do not like their accommodations, or they might meet bad neighbors who have weird habits in which they can never find themselves to meet with. Furthermore, living alone teaches a student how to budget, which can be very hard, for nothing costs free (Krishna Reddy – June 21, 2016). Living costs can be higher than any student would expect, and if these factors are not handled well, a student ends up depressed and stressed. The National Survey of College Counseling in 2012 shows that 88% of college counseling centers reports an increased need for psychological resources for students on campus due the new pressures they encountered in their life (Nassaris, 2016). This new situation is not going to last longer if students know how to overcome the feelings of loneliness by giving themselves the opportunity to enjoy themselves with new friends and new activities; whenever they feel alone they can be in contact with their family members through social communications applications as Skype and Face time (Arora, 2014).

In a conclusion, study abroad is a better way to prepare students for the workplace even though the costs of achieving it are highly paid; all these costs are repaid later for the prosperity of the homeland country. In 2000, 35 institutions in the University System of Georgia began their mission to report the results of study abroad. The researchers showed that their report included 283,000 students at 425 study abroad programs of all types of education. After ten years of documentation, they concluded that students who study abroad have improved the academic performance and professional development compared to those who received their studied at home campus (Berdan, Goodman & Taylor, 2016). And, study abroad gives the students a chance to develop close bonds with the natives of that foreign country, make new friends from different places in the world, learn about a new culture and acquire new language skills needed for achieving any success in professional life. All these cons cannot make students away from feeling anxious and homesick when they find themselves in a place that they cannot have any pop visit to anyone and cannot enjoy their weekends with families and friends. Jeremy Christey, Chair of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Universities and Colleges, explains that depression is characterized by a sense of loss. “It might be loss of pleasure, control, mastery or even a loss of engagement with day-to-day life,” he says. “If you don’t feel engaged with your new class or community, or if you feel like you’re not as good at your work in university as you were in school, it might start to affect you” (Arora, 2014). Briefly, study abroad is a worth experience; however, the student should know how to make it a useful experience that changes all his or her life after. As it is said, “We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves,” do not you consider that study abroad deserves to sacrifice what is better now to win the best later?
