Hybrid Identities

Hybrid identity is an aftermath of globalisation and entails a harmonised view that transcends all forms of boundaries. This occurs through the amalgamation of one’s cultural perspectives with those of the new cultures that they experience in order to create a middle ground. Cosmopolitanism, multi-religionist views, multi-ethnic identities, transgender identities, travelling cultures, and multi-species are examples of hybrid identities (Portera, 2010).

In Saudi Arabia, hybrid identities have been applied in many sectors such as the education system that accommodates students from different cultures and different parts of the world. Consequently, learning approaches ride along the harmonised cultural perspectives that are acceptable across the students’ fraternity.

In the health sector, the approaches utilised in the provision of quality healthcare are an amalgamation of the western practices and the indigenous practices. The construction sector embraces both the indigenous designs while utilising modern day technologies. Other sectors that embrace hybrid identities include the textile industry, the financial institutions, the sports industry, the tourism industry, and the governance systems in Saudi Arabia.

The government should integrate cross-cultural learning in the curriculum of Saudi learners in order to transmit it to future generations. Critical pieces of the cross-cultural practices should also be maintained in the museums archived as part of the nation’s history. Intercultural experiences provide alternative or complimentary perspectives about certain aspects of life that are integrated into the known views of the learner or teacher to shift their identity. This makes intercultural education very complex considering the multiple diverse perspectives that may be conflicting in nature (Grant & Portera, 2010).
