HEALTH FOOD (CASE ABOUT HEALTH FOOD)
Unhealthy eating has been a concern in the contemporary world, which has resulted to the design and spread of health food material in the bid to promote healthy eating. The video, Healthy Food Guide by Povilas Kundriavcevas, provides nine tips about healthy food. In the video, the presenter shows some types of fast foods and asks a question, “Do you like these foods”. Later, the presenter indicates that he too likes the foods, but we must avoid taking such foods (Kundriavcevas 2012). The first healthy food tip is about diet planning whereby the presenter advices on how to do diet planning. According to the presenter, a healthy diet plan should be adopted slowly by making small steps towards realising the healthy diet program. It should not be done as a drastic change because it may be too challenging for people to follow it. Additionally, commitment is required for one to fully implement a healthy diet program. The second tip is about what comprises a healthy diet, which according to the presenter includes carbohydrates, vitamins, proteins, fiber, minerals and fat, which are required to help the body remain healthy. Thirdly, the presenter indicates that healthy diet is not all about what one eats in terms of the constituents of a diet. According to the presenter, how one eats food also matters most in determining whether one is adopting a healthy diet program.
Fruits and vegetables are extremely crucial components of a healthy diet because they contain vital elements including vitamins, fiber, minerals and antioxidants. Accordingly, a healthy diet program should have plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables especially colorful fruits and vegetables because they make food attractive. A healthy diet program should also have whole grains because they contain vast amount of fiber, phytochemicals, antioxidants and energy that provide the body with the required energy for a long time. Phytochemicals and antioxidants found in whole grain are important because they protect the body against major diseases including some types of cancers, coronary heart diseases (CHDs) and diabetes (Kundriavcevas 2012).
Fats are important in the body. According to the video, it is extremely crucial to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy fats, know the sources of healthy fats in order to consume only healthy fats and avoid unhealthy fats. Omega-3 fats are important in the body because they serve important roles in the body including nourishing the brain, skin, hair and nails, improving a person’s mood and reducing chances of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Proteins provide the body with required energy alongside maintaining and repairing broken body cells, tissues and organs. Protein is crucial for growth, muscle development, immunity enhancement and efficient performance of the respiratory system and the heart (Kundriavcevas 2012).
A healthy diet program should also include enough amount of calcium for strong bones and ensuring that the body remains strong to perform required functions or activities. Finally, the video recommends limitation of sugar and salt. If one is able to eat enough of whole grains, fats, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, one will realise that there is no need for additional sugar and salts.
Diet related diseases including obesity, diabetes, CHDs and CVDs are on the rise, being cited as among the leading causes of high mortality rates (UCLA 2014; Tamkins 2014 & BBC 2014). Accordingly, there is need for adverts to advice people on how to eat healthily and avoid these diseases while ensuring healthy and productive lives. However, despite these adverts on healthy eating, it is worrying that people are continuing to eat unhealthy foods. Food companies are largely to blame for this problem because of using social media and other advertisement channels to promote their foods, some of which are unhealthy and are contributing to unhealthy lifestyles ((Rabin 2012). This means, therefore, that we as responsible marketers, have to remind people of the importance of healthy eating and developing healthy diet programs. We should remember that we need a healthy population to market our products to. In other words, if we promote unhealthy foods, we shall contribute to an unhealthy population that will be spending too much of its income on drugs (medication) instead of consuming the products we market.
The concept of the marketing mix especially place and promotion are crucial in the delivery of healthy eating and healthy diet messages. Firstly, it is important to identify the target audience, who mostly include children, teenagers and middle-aged people especially the working class. These are the prime targets of unhealthy foods especially fast foods (working class people) and good-looking foods (children and teenagers) (Rabin 2012 & UCLA 2014). These people need to be reminded of the food comprise healthy food and food that should be avoided on the basis that it is not healthy or contribute to unhealthy lifestyles. Social media and television adverts appear to be the best advertisement channels that will reach these people most effectively because they are attracted to these two channels. Another point of consideration is timing and placement. For television adverts, timing needs to coincide with the time the target population is watching television, which should be during supper time when the target population is enjoying television at home. On social media, placement should be where everybody is able to see the message. I believe this approach will help pass the message and promote healthy eating, which will reduce diet-related diseases.
