Introduction
Group performances are enjoyable due to the combination of different voices that come together to make a presentation. It is, however, important to take note of the fact that performing as a team can be difficult. This is due to the complexities that are associated with managing groups. In most cases, leadership skills and teamwork are needed in coordinating the performances. This paper seeks to examine the importance of leadership skills and teamwork when managing group performances. It will also examine several key elements that are vital to the success of group performances.
Leadership skills are essential competencies in managing group performances. The existence of a leader or leaders is thus essential in a group. One of the importance of leadership skills is that it improves the efficacy of the group (Gustems, 89). Singing in groups can sometimes be chaotic and non-syngeneic in the event that the group members are not directed on how to work together in order to produce a quality performance and sound. Consequently, to attain the objective of overall quality sound, the input of a leader such as a conductor with good leadership qualities is essential.
Conflict is a common occurrence in groups. Disagreements often arise due to the diverse opinions that people hold. In some cases, a group may consist of individuals with very strong opinions which may further result to contentions and wrangles that are difficult to resolve. Leadership can be useful in dealing with conflict. When conflict arises, the authoritarian approach of leadership can be useful in resolving the issues among group members. According to Goleman (2011) in Gustems (87), an authoritarian leader is able to impose their goals and rules on the followers and takes definite decisions to resolve conflicts. On the other hand, conflict can be resolved by a leader using soft approaches of conflict resolution such as negotiation and mediation in order to attain positive outcomes.
Leadership skills are also essential in ascertaining that all group members are on the same page or they are able to work together in harmony (Crupi). In some scenarios, events such as concerts are often mired by the lack of coordination due the absence of proper leadership. However, when effective leadership skills such as motivation, delegation, and coordination exist, all participants, for instance, the singers, the drummers and the violin and guitar players will be on the same page based on the fact that they are successfully guided by the leader to take up their roles.
Teamwork is integral because it assists in blending the different personalities that exist in a group. Group performance involves the coming together of people with different voices, abilities, preferences, and attributes. It can be difficult to blend this character traits together. Implementing teamwork is a prolific approach of ensuring that synergy is attained during the performance. An approach that can be used to promote teamwork is using the musical instruments as a strategy of building coordination. The members of the group can work together to ensure that the musical instruments achieve the overall sound. For instance, Solomon (1), discloses that whether it be with general music classes or special groups, drum ensemble gives music the teachers powerful tool to build teamwork which is essential in blending diverse personalities.
Teamwork is also essential because it assists in the development of support. When singing in a group context, it is important for different members to help support each other, for instance, in their vocals and when playing various instruments.
In conclusion, this paper underscores the fact that leadership and teamwork are essential in group performances. The paper is categorical that group performances can be difficult when compared to solo performance. Consequently, it is important to implement good leadership skills and teamwork.
