Green Computing

What is green computing? What would happen without green computing?

Green Computing refers to the environmentally-responsible use of computing resources to ensure that the environment is preserved. To achieve such sustainability, it is important to ensure the design, manufacture and disposal of computer materials which includes servers, subsystems and hardware is handled successfully and proficiently with none or negligible effects to the environment. Initially, the purpose of green computing was identified to be the reduction of harmful material while maximizing on the importance of energy (Ganesh & Anbuudayasankar, 2013). It also aims at promoting the purpose of recycling of such wastes and the biodegradability of obsolete equipment and industrial unit waste.

Without green computing, it would be impossible to restore material and equipment that has been rendered defunct. In an increasingly adaptable electronic society, the relevance of green computing has been encouraged in many organizations and companies to ensure that the environment is kept safe fro harmful electronic material. Considering the susceptibility of electronics to damage, they have been built with materials that once degraded may be harmful to the environment (Ariwa, 2014). Therefore, without green computing, there would be release of chemicals and access to confidential information that may threaten the competency of the sector.

Describe in enough detail three main dimensions of green computing

There are three dimensions of green computing. They include the economic, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability (Hu & Kaabouch, 2012). In terms of the economic dimension, green computing may be evaluated through the impact it has in the future and any potential for growth. From an economist perspective, using cheap material reduces the costs of production. However, from an environmentalist perspective, once computing material such as hardware and software are produced using cheap raw materials, the rate of pollution tends to increase. Some cheap materials concentrate high levels of chemical material and easily dispensable. Therefore, during disposal of recycling, there is increased waste, gas and radioactivity.

In terms of energy efficiency, green computing intends on reducing the amount of energy that is required to manufacture and dispose hardware and software. The conservation of energy is a sole responsibility of the corporate field (Hu & Kaabouch, 2012). Through green computing, companies can achieve significant energy consumption based on the computing systems put in place. While manufacturing computing material that cannot be recycled, it is important to adopt thermal insulation and thermal matter. Conventional engineering is a plausible method that ascertains energy conservation. Recycling also eliminates the possibility of using more energy during new product manufacture. Environmental sustainability involves employing manufacture and disposal methods that will not compromise the future generations. Environmental sustainability implies increased efficiency in the employment of resources that eventually leads to economic growth and improved health and quality of life.

How can you support green computing? Be specific and suggest five different things you can do to help

Considering the benefits that are derived from green computing, I can support the activity through encouraging the use of conventional hardware and software materials that can be recycled such as solid-state drives. I can also support green computing through advocating for algorithm efficiency. In such cases, increased efficiency leads to the need to improve the amount of computer resources required for computing purposes. Similarly, I would relocate resources that require increased electricity to more efficient locations that may not be expensive (Kim & Lee, 2011). I would employ computer virtualization that ascertains generalization of computer resources. In terms of storage elements, I would employ the least form factor that ensures conservation of energy. Larger storage drives tend to consume more energy considering they require external sources of energy as well as interaction with the hardware. Solid-state drives that are not removable reduce the costs of operation and ensure performance is increased.
