Grade 5 Classroom Management

Description of the Classroom and the Learners

The students in grade 5 are aged between 9 and 12 years. My classroom has 12 boys and 13 girls, and this provides mixed gender grouping during cooperative learning activities. My classroom also has one student with special needs.

Philosophy of Classroom Management

My management plan is student-centered on ensuring that they develop sense of responsibility for what they do. Furthermore, meeting their need is a vital aspect of my classroom. I will make the classroom challenging and engage the students by interacting one-on-one to develop a strong relationship. A healthy teacher-student relationship is crucial in ensuring there are meaningful discussions and interactions. I will encourage the students to participate in class so that they can monitor their progress. Therefore, talking will be significant in both in class and group discussions. Talking will be common place in my classroom, along with group work. I will maintain fairness to ensure the students can feel equal.

I will be firm and consistent with students discipline to ensure that a positive learning environment is maintained for the students. I will anticipate in preventing inappropriate behaviors before they occur. I will ask the questions in my classroom regularly to ensure that the students are paying attention. The students will have the choice to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate behaviors and am sure they will understand my classroom expectations. I prefer the students to make choices about what they do, but rather working together as a team so that we can achieve together. I want to ensure that all students are involved in the learning process, and thus make learning interesting and competitive. Involving the students in the classroom makes them more motivated to learn. Proactive is paramount in classroom management.

Classroom rules are imperative as they cover behaviors that could interfere with the learning of the students, and when they carried out effectively, rules can teach valuable lessons in their life (Evertson, Emmer & Worsham, 2006). I will allow the students to participate in making the rules as they would be more inclined in obeying them. Students will make a poster with classroom rules and have it sent to their parent so that they can sign it; this will allow them to be part of what we are trying to achieve in the classroom. The poster will be hung in the classroom to serve as a reminder.

  • Respect their classmates and the teacher.

  • The students should listen and follow direction.

  • The students should raise your hand before asking for anything.

  • The students should keep your hands to themselves.

  • Complete your work.

Attention-getting Strategies

A consistent attention getting should be used to attain the students’ attention quickly (Canter, 2011). In my classroom, I will employ audible, visual and portable signals.

Strategy 1: Give me a Five

Step 1: Ask students to ‘Give me a Five’ while raising right hand

Step 2: Student stop their activity and raise their hands

Step 3: When student raise their they should be silent and all eyes on the teacher

Strategy 2: Use clapping pattern

Step 1: The first clap to get student attention

Step 2: The second time the student respond and clap along

Step 3: Soon they are done clapping all eyes should be on me

Strategy 3: Count down

Step 1: Begin 5 and count down to 0

Step 2: At 0 all students are silent and all eyes on the teacher

These signals are perfect for grade 5 students as they are visual to learners.

Classroom Procedures

Procedures are paramount for young students. I will post a schedule on a daily basis do that the student can know what they will do the following day. According to Canter (2011), routines are important for young learners. I will have the student repeat the procedures to ensure they are fully understood. I will focus on five procedures.

Procedure 1: Morning procedure

Step 1: Greet the teacher with a hello.

Step 2: Student unpack all the items.

Step 3: Place the backpacks at the required areas.

Step 4: Sharpen two pencils for the day

Step 5: Listen and follow instructions.

Procedure 2: Walking in the classroom

Step 1: Students will walk into the class keeping their hands to themselves and their mouth shut.

Step 2: Sit at their assigned tables.

Step 3: Students raise their hands if they have a question.

Step 4: If no questions students should work quietly on their assignment.

Step 5: If the teacher gives instructions, they should listen and follow.

Procedure 3: Gathering

Step 1: Wait until they are called in their respective learning club.

Step 2: Move their chair silently and move to the gathering place.

Step 3: Sit on their laps and wait silently.

Step 5: Wait for instructions.

Procedure 4: Transitioning from one class to another.

Step 1: The teacher says it’s time to get out.

Step 2: Students clean their table.

Step 3: Take the materials required from the table.

Step 4: Students line up at the door.

Step 5: Walk quietly towards the class when instructed.

Procedure 5: End of the day

Step 1: When the class is dismissed, they should walk quietly with hands to themselves.

Step 2: Students materials from the table and put them into their bags.

Step 3: Sit at their assigned tables.

Step 4: When the bell rings, walk towards the exit.

Classroom Management Plan Description

I will create a Space ship theme poster with seven regions. This chart is both for negative and positive behaviors.

The students will move to different regions depending on their behaviors. The spaceship chart is a reinforcement system where the parent can know the student behavior. Student names are put on a clothespin and the teacher moves the pins up and down depending on student behavior. Students earn tickets for positive behaviors and strikes for negative behavior

I carry the chart everywhere when am with my students.


Positive reinforcements are crucial in my classroom management plan. Research indicates that negative reinforcement only works for a short period but, in the long run, it more likely to reinforce the unwanted behavior (Evertson, Emmer & Worsham, 2006). The reinforcement plan for students follow the classroom rules. I will employ a continuum of positive consequences, ranging from free and frequent to long-term to appropriate behavior. I have developed ways in which reinforcement can be incorporated in immediate, intermediate and long term level

Level 2: Home note praising the student for following instructions

Level 3: Acknowledgement by the principal

Fun activities when student raise hand

Level 1: 10 minutes of computer time

Level 2: Choose a friend to play game in computer

Tokens when student is respectful

Level 1: The student with most token at the end day earns one ticket.

Level 2: Most tickets at the end of the week earn a special treat

Level 3: Most tickets in a month earns a field trip

Stickers when students walk with hand on themselves

Level 1: Students gets a marble

Level 2: Students get a happy face for getting three marbles to participate in choice time

Level 3: Students earns a star each day they behave, and can participate in a monthly lottery if they have more than 10 stars.

Puzzles when the student complete own work

Level 1: Student earn a piece of their puzzle when they meet class criteria

Level 2: 5 piece of the puzzle earn a special seat

Level3: Complete puzzle one become the student of the week

Hierarchy of five Consequences with examples

I will also use logical consequences since they are connected with behavior.

Failure to listen and follow instructions

Step 1: Verbal warning

Step 2: Student is removed from the table to sit alone.

Step 3: Student sits alone for five days.

Step 4: Student is given office referral.

Failure to raise the hand to ask for permission

Step 1: Warning

Step 2: 5-minute timeout

Step 3: Call home

Running instead of walking

Classroom management is essential to ensure a good learning environment for students. For this reason, creating a good environment will involve all students. I strongly believe that creating a good environment will encourage them to set and achieve their goals. In other words, it can limit behavior problems in the class thus allowing the students to enjoy the learning process.
