Reflection

Introduction

The adolescence and youthful stage is a time of self discovery. This stage is crucial as they youth try to know more about their culture and identity (Buckingham, 2008). In the modern digital age, the youth are increasingly relying on technology in almost all the aspects of their lives. The paper thus discuses the youth culture as well as identity in terms of digital natives and cyborg concepts.

Discussion

The current group of youth and adolescents were found high levels of technology since they were born. As a result of this, they know technology better than most of the other aspects (Buckingham, 2008). This therefore makes them digital natives as they have been using technology all their lives. The lives of the adolescents mainly revolve around the digital aspects. The adolescents in the current times are no longer interested in playing with and socializing with their friends. The friends and people in the social media are much more important to the youth. This has impacted negatively on the relationship that the youth have with their parents as well as other members of the society. Most of the adolescents spend more time on their digital device communicating with their online friends as compared to their parents as well as the community members (Turkle, 2012). As the digital natives, the youth have online communities that are present in the social media. The youth and adolescents mainly identify themselves with the online communities which has completely changed their culture and identity.

As a result of using the digital equipment and concepts, the youths are increasingly becoming cyborgs. This means they are fully relying on technology to do things for them including giving them instructions (TEDWomen, 2010). This has greatly transformed the community as well as the culture. In the digital age, the youth identify themselves with technology as well as its concepts. The overreliance on technology has made humans more or cyborgs as they no longer think for themselves (TEDWomen, 2010). This can be compared to external brains which does the thinking for man. Unlike the past, where man was controlling the machines, it is the machines that are controlling man. The use of machines has impacted negatively on the human connections as it has lead to the increase in individualism. The youth are no longer relying on each other for support but are instead turning to technology.

In personal professional practice, the digital age has simplified how activities are carried out. It is possible to hold meeting with colleagues who are in different countries. This is mainly through video conferencing. This has therefore reduced the need for travelling to a specific location in order to attend the meetings (Buckingham, 2008). The same is also applicable during the learning process. It is no longer necessary to sit in a lecture hall in order to learn. Distance learning makes it possible for the learners to access the lectures at the comfort of the offices or homes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is evident that technology has completely transformed the current society. The youth and adolescents are becoming completely reliant on technology.
