Globalization presents both benefits and challenges. Despite the varying opinions from supporters and opponents, I totally agree with you on the significance of globalization to exclusion of individuals within societies. Globalization is a widely-debated issue both politically as well as academically(Christie, 2008). While appreciating castell’s view of exclusion, I find the question of exclusion to be more striking as never before, with inequality being its most dramatic form. Within the globalized world marred by high inequality rates, technological developments have come under pressure on their role in exclusion. As technological advancements continuously evolve and occupy the centre-stage in human activities, the globalized world continues to socially and economically favour those accessing advanced technologies and rapidly adapting to the dynamic technological environment. This has created disparities between the technologically-included and the technologically-excluded individuals as technologically-enabled learning and working prevails. The resultant effect is a marginalized/neglected group susceptible to violent/criminal behaviour. With such contradictory globalization promises, I agree that technologies can provide solutions to some old problems while creating new ones. However, the impact of such realities should never be viewed as uniformly negative.

Your insight on globalization’s impacts on education, which I agree to, is also spectacular and real. In the year 2009, I was in Dubai consulting a business partner on the progress of the business and the employee performances. It turned out that many younger employees had actually attended various branches of U.S-accredited universities that were relatively new in the Gulf nations, while others were quite unaware. Online education is already commanding a lion’s share of the rapidly expanding global education (Spring, 2009). Enabled by globalization and computers, one would definitely notice all the good in it and associate globalization with greater potential benefits. However, this might only hold true to the extent that everybody is included. As often the case, many have been left behind while globalization gives privileges to those who can access the required resources (White, 2008). The privileged are those accessing the required technological resources and therefore utilize online distance learning in earning international degrees without necessarily moving. For those without the required knowledge, this is a challenging task with the end result of inaccessibility to such educational services, consequently retarding the economy.

On class-divisions, I agree with you as I regard globalization to be the greatest contributor. I used to teach in the United Arab Emirates too so I went through similar experiences as I encouraged a particularly brilliant student from a poor background to take all classes despite the financial hurdles promising that I will settle the student’s financial debts. Global privilege not only affects schooling in the global times but also impacts significantly on the knowledge economy (Christie, 2008). Currently also, impacts of globalization are being felt within the various social classes with the middle class in U.S declining rapidly (Brumley, 2010). The lesson is that globalization cannot simply be viewed as a process facilitating technical progress, growing incomes, economic freedom and political freedom, but also one that has significant consequences.
