Introduction
According to the video, a geohazard is a risk caused by a certain geological process that can either be long term or short term. Moreover, it can affect local or regional social- economy. In petroleum drilling, there are several risks that may occur if care is not taken but there are also measures that can be taken to minimize these hazards.
Explosions and fires are an example of geoharzards in petroleum drilling that can be caused by ignition of flammable gases and vapour, lightning, and open flames such as cigarettes, welding tools among others. Fire and explosion incidences should be controlled at all times to avoid loss of lives and properties. The noise produced during seismic search during off shore drilling can cause ear damage to sea animals like whales. Oil spills in oceans release toxins in water such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that kill marine animals. Off shore drilling can have adverse effects on locals in the case where the coastal community depends on revenue from tourism and fishing. Pollution during the drilling process endangers the marine lives which in return affects the local society’s economic activity negatively.
According to the speaker, petroleum drilling involves different activities that require various equipment. Critical measures should be taken to ensure safety. Some of the measures include identifying the risks, coming up with mechanisms to protect the workers and the locals, communication of the risks, and safety training for workers.
Conclusion
Off-shore petroleum drilling might be a source of oil but very risky. Risks such as fires, explosions and oil spills can have adverse effects on both humans and marine animals and may destroy the coastal economy. Safety measures are, therefore, necessary to mitigate these risks.
