Sexual harassment in the work place

Sexual harassment is a kind of discrimination due to the sex of the affected employee. It happens in a work place due to the sex of the affected or even race, social status as well as ethnic back ground (Miner-Rubino & Cortina 2007). Women, just like the Sana, in our case study; are affected by sexual harassment more than men and very few usually report due to fears of intimidation or even loss of job. Sexual harassment in the workplace affects individuals, coworkers and organizational level in general (Workplace Sexual Harassment Prevention n.d.). It includes physical and or verbal conduct of a sexual nature as well as demand for sexual favors (Workplace Sexual Harassment Prevention n.d.). Sana thought that she was sexually harassed just because the manager tried to be nice to her but according to her cultural background it was not good. Women in Saudi where Sana came from are conservative and do not engage closely to men. She was affected as an individual, due to the way the manager looked at her and how he talked to her. This made the girl to think of quitting her job therefore affecting the organizational behavior negatively.

Sana was found to be impacted negatively by the sexual harassment thoughts she had and this brought about unproductivity in her job. From the case of the girl we learn that one’s productivity in the work place can be affected due to the mentality of sexual harassment. It is good to understand that sexual harassment may be verbal without any physical contact like the girl’s case (Robbins 1993). The consequences of sexual harassment in the work place was found to have short term negative impacts on employee’s organizational behavior like the case of the girl (Miner-Rubino & Cortina 2007). Some of these impacts included the following.

Dissatisfaction on the job was found to go hand in hand with sexual harassment thoughts. According to Robbins (1993) the affected individual may be angry in the short run and feel unsatisfied with the job. It was very evident in the girl because her relationship with her manager was not good due to the feeling of sexual harassment she had from the way the manager talked to her. This was found to change the organizational behavior of the affected girl in that her attitude towards managers as well as the working environment had changed to the worst after thinking that she was being sexually harassed by the manager. The girl felt her cultural background was the source of sexual harassment; this was the reason that made her productivity in the work place to reduce significantly.

Form the story of the girl we can learn that good communication is very vital more so in international companies where people come from different cultures and cultural backgrounds. The reason for the girl feeling sexually harassed was because in her culture men were not supposed to talk openly to women. Their relationship was supposed to be characterized by high levels of officially recognized code of conduct. It was noted that the affected or the victim would spend more time and energy in avoiding the manager and reporting the case to the HR instead of concentrating with her job therefore reducing the productivity (Workplace Sexual Harassment Prevention n.d.). Some of these short term effects can have long term impacts on the victim. Panic attacks can lead to depression in the long run even after harassment thoughts have stopped (Miner-Rubino & Cortina 2007). Association of the harassment with the line of work can make the victim change her career and this will affect the organizational behavior greatly (Robbins 1993). The girl was found to be depressed due to the negative thoughts and looking for how to quit the job. In conclusion it is evident that the girl (Sana) was feeling that she was harassed sexually because of her cultural beliefs. We have also learnt that it is advisable for international companies to use international communication business language to cater for the cultural variation.
