Creative Thinking: Opening Up a world of Thought

Creative thinking involves developing new ideas and is aimed at encouraging curiosity and enhancing divergence among people. The process of creative thinking is characterized by flexibility, fluency, elaboration and originality in doing things (Edgar, 2008, p.46). However, to achieve creative results you need to apply methods of evolution, synthesis, revolution, reapplication and changing direction (Edgar, 2008, p.47). In creative thinking, commitment to a particular path does not apply, but to a given goal. Thus educators should encourage students to look for appropriate, imaginative and ethical solutions to problems (Edgar, 2008, p.48). In learning perspective, what determines creative thinking is the interaction between the student and the learning situation. Creativity provides learners with the opportunity to articulate their knowledge without hindrance (Edgar, 2008, p.49).

Does Group Work Spark Creativity?

Group work is a learning experience that is practiced by higher learning institutions and has received mixed reactions from educators whether it promotes or discourages creativity among learners. Despite criticisms, group work supports creativity among learners. Students who engage in group work acquired complementary skills and learn much from team members (Boland
et al, p.1). The most effective education strategies to be used by educators should integrate delivery methods to enhance creative learning atmosphere with emphasis on personal time management as well as practical application of learning experiences (Boland
et al, p. 2). Marketing and entrepreneurship are some of the discipline areas used by higher education to encourage students to expand their abilities and commit their effort to achieving outcomes beyond the set limitations (Boland
et al, p.4).

On Becoming Creative

Training is considered an important source of creativity and innovation by many companies. However, there are three internal conditions in individuals that promote constructive creativity. The first one is openness to experience which requires being flexible to what we belief in and perceive in interpreting situations. It is the ability to be open to happenings at any given time, and to explore unique experiences in life. The second condition is internal locus of evaluation where by there should be a healthy integrated personal evaluation considering others judgment to be able to foster creative productivity. The last condition is being in a position to play with ideas and emerging activities and view life differently.


Brainstorming is used synonymously with creative thinking and involves generating ideas in an organized group setting based on judgment until the best idea is achieved. It is a process that leads to the development of creative solutions to existing problems. Creativity is applied in the generation of ideas by team members, since not only do members develop new ideas, but there exists chain-reaction model where original ideas are refined by all team members. Brainstorming is effective in formal teams where members are well organized and respect each other. The process is divided into phases; idea generation and solution selection phase (Creative Industries Research Institute, 2000).

From Brainstorming to Structuring to Evaluation and Choice

Brainstorming is a communication technique that helps in finding appropriate solutions to a problem. It is a process that involves generation of various ideas from which the best alternative solutions to a problem is chosen. Creativity is considered as part of brainstorming (Forman et al, 2001, p.127). During the initial stage of brainstorming, the ideas are first narrowed down. This is followed by grouping and combining the ideas so that voting can commence. Rating of the ideas by the members is also important in making the right choices. Decisions are then structured either top down, bottom up or from pros and cons. The last phase of brainstorming is evaluation of the selected solution.
