FIFA World Cup has become Increasingly Important

Soccer is a worldwide game. It is the most popular sport globally and it is played in every corner of the world. The World Cup is the most watched and biggest sporting event worldwide. Nations regularly face aggressive competition for the prospect to host the FIFA World Cup, but apart from achieving a national glory, the economic benefits gained by host-countries from accommodating this world-renowned event are very high. Many researchers mention that long-lasting gains can be made from compering the event, from employment increase, to improve to the economy, to the bequest of national infrastructure. The effects that the sporting industry has had in the economic decision making of countries where these mega-events are held have dramatically increased since the 1980s global expansion. Advertising and tourism revenues generated by Fifa World Cup have become a prominent economic boosts to the nations hosting the events. Additionally, globalization has increased at a high rate in those nations given the importance of foreign Direct Investment especially to those countries that are still under development.

One of the main advantages of hosting such an event is the changes in infrastructure. Organizing a large event likeWorld Cup gives the host-countries the opportunities to invest in massive investments in numerous sectors. The host country benefits positively from better and renovated stadiums, expanded airports to ease transportation, better Information Technology services and improved transport sectors. The popular world event is advantageous in that it provides stimulus in economy by focusing on far-reaching projects. These projects are important in that they are focused on the acceleration of infrastructure project completion (Schuessler 11).

Another reason why hosting the event would be of importance is that it causes increase in global trade. The World Cup brings with it the prospect to boost international trade by making the nation of operation more global. Host-countries know that the brands, which are the world’s biggest brands which has the power to act as brandmarketing tool in the company’s business.Football is a multi-billion pound industry globally. There are specific opportunities since fans from different countries follow their clubs in-lineand require demonstrating their identification with their favorite global brand using the playform football(Schuessler 15).

Take for instance how SouthAfrica benefited from hosting the 2010World Cup. The economic landscape of South Africa became radically altered. Commercial life became easier for the citizens of South Africa with new transport links, new roads and improved telecommunications. Investing in the stadium enhanced the creation of more than 6,000 construction jobs and 40,000 police officers due to the security demands of the game. South Africa today continues to enjoy a reputational boost and this has helped bring visitors and inward investment(Schuessler 21). The country had estimated for 450,000 visitors during the world cup but got 200.000 extra fans during the World Cup tournament. In other words, holding the mega-event can rebrand a country to become a new tourist destination and one that is founded on the development of global sports event business model. This means that since South Africa hosted the World Cup, it has since then accommodated other major sport activities in the inaugural International Sports Tourism Conference in Johannesburg.

The FIFA World cup held last in Brazil was also of great advantage to the country in a way that it made the most out of this opportunity. 3.63 million Jobs were created in the beverage and food, utilities, civil construction, tourism, business services and IT industries in Brazil. The improvement of infrastructure increased Brazils competitiveness as a tourist destination and with a high anticipated exposure of the country abroad, Brazil has since them seen significant increase in foreign tourists as well as internal tourism growing in the country.

After learning the advantages that hosting such events has on nations, which country would not want to compete in order to ensure that they area given the chance to host the event. The lure of spectacular and large events is perceived as an expedient way to attract the interest of the media in the host country which is hoped that it would translate to capital influx through new investment and tourism. The events also facilitate the positive growth of the political economy of globalization and focuses on developing countries in terms of reducing poverty levels.

Organizing such mega-events requires the host country to employ legacy planning. They ensure that it follows careful strategic planning keeping in mind community development. It is difficult to justify the large investments required to host the event. Therefore, mega events are advantageous in that they ensurethat country employs a comprehensive legacy planning method which contributes to community development and benefits all residents for quite a long period of time. The FIFAfraternity also works hand-in-hand with the host country to ensure that the sustainability efforts of organizing the event are guided by the principles of ethical behavior, transparency, and respect for stakeholder interests, accountability, international human rights and behavior norms as well as ethical behavior. This is of great advantage is the host country receives efforts from the FIFA which eventually leave a positive legacy after the matches end(Schuessler 30).

The host country also gains in terms of achieving high sustainable procurement policies and advocacy whereby FIFA engages third-party organizationsfrom the host country and promotes socially responsible stakeholder behavior. The host country is also guaranteed consumer protection as the event organizers ensure that the safety and health, consumer education, consumer services and data protection is guaranteed. It is also advantageous in that the host country receives fair labor practices which involve fair wages and safe and health work place for all business practitioners(Schuessler 42). FIFA leaves a positive legacy to the host country although there is no definite consensus that shows the effect will continue to be positive for those countries. However it all depends on how the country is going to sustain to those impacts and ensure continued growth. FIFA invests in capacity building programmes in a host country thus leaving a legacy of football development and promoted health lifestyles(Schuessler 59).

It is clear that from the above discussion, the positive impacts of hosting world cup outweigh the negative impacts. The negative are quite few and not given much emphasis. They include issues like environmental pollution, noise, traffic congestion among other minor impacts. FIFA World Cup is adouble-edged sword only if it is used in the right way. It brings outstanding benefits otherwise the destruction that can be associated with the abuse of the even would be unlimited and costly. The key decision makers, investors and organizers of the event need to have their individual independent thoughts, which should neither, be driven excessively by the overstated version from neither sport booster nor have a fear of risks and costs that economists tend to mention when organizing such events. The negative and positive contributions of FIFA are just crucial factors associated with mega-sporting events. There is no doubt that compering a mega-sporting event would create economic boost in a short term, however, form long term aspect, it is hard to predict the event is a helpfulcomponent or a substantialliability to the hosting countries.
