Executive summary

Waste management remains a threat to the health and wellbeing of residents of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. Most of the residents in this region burn and dump wastes in a way it renders them vulnerable to environmental and physical ill-health. It requires intervention measures through recycling and running educational programs. This report explores the design and outcomes of the waste management project by looking at the design process, overall outcomes and makes recommendations that will inform decisions to the implementation and sustainability of the project. The design considerations underscores opportunities for recycling based on project expression, reduction of waste and community involvement. Alternatively, organic wastes could be collected and disposed under solid waste management methods. The choice of final design begins with the brainstorming of ideas, choice of best possible ideas, rating of ideas, and simultaneously implementing recycling and education programs. The design project constitutes education campaign and recycling shelter made of sorted materials such as plastic strings and bottles as well as tin cans. The design decision is informed by a decision matrix based on the highest scores. Furthermore, the final design considerations are geared towards sustainability, climate change adaptations and diversity. While the triple bottom line of sustainability is social, environmental and economic benefits, climate change adaptation requires the use of materials that will reduce the effect of global warming. Moreover, education campaign reflects diversity in recycling regardless of age, gender and education. The project also complies with ethical and EWB design considerations.

The final design methodology comprises of build, educate and create a waste management system. The project uses plastic bottles, tin cans, cardboard, paper and plastic bags. With the assumption that the local community is interested in making their communities look good and clean, the limitations of the project is seen as motivation, shelter and overfilling. This BEC system is designed to benefit the community and address community’s ability to maximize results. As a result, it achieves harmony between environmental, social and economic sustainability to meet the needs of present and future generations. This project increases the environmental sustainability by reducing the amount of dumped and burnt waste and social responsibility by including youth in the upcycling and education process. In addition, the project will be economically sustainable through sale of souvenirs and art as well as cleaner community to attract tourists. Although the space to work with is smaller, much of the rubbish and solid wastes will have been cleared. This project has a relationship with other projects in areas of water, energy and shelter. Therefore, teamwork is necessary in creating stronger work relationships and appropriate mitigation of climate change effects on the environment and the project.

For future adaptation, the project recommends a community wide support to the program and its flexibility for expansion. As well, monitoring and evaluation of the program should be done on constant basis to eliminate negative aspects and assure communities of continued benefits from this project. With a robust waste management system in place, it is possible to improve overall health, offer more opportunities to community members, decrease pollution, and reduce greenhouse gases through better and sustainable waste management methods.
