Ethical Dilemma and Core Principles Guide

Towards Decision Making

Ethical dilemma is a kind of a situation whereby a person involved has difficulties of making a choice. A mental conflict normally exists between the moral imperatives involved in the situation.

My employer company had a firm policy regarding stealing of company property. Used company equipment was on table for sale by bidding every month. I saw a valued employee who was 2 months from retirement steal a car alternator and hide it in his car prior to day of sale. Was I supposed to report him? Was it good I keep quiet?

Stealing? Well, the employee knew it was wrong. I also knew it was wrong to do so. But, why was theft carried out? Personal greed answers the question best way.

Because I knew about the firm policy, I accosted the employee and said, buddy! Why do you do this? It can cost you your retirement benefits. I told him that unless he returns the car alternator, I would report him to the management.

Acquiring such items by theft can only save you few coins but at same time ruin your career, that is get sacked and may be end up prosecuted in a court of law. You may be fined huge sums of money, jailed or both. It depends on your luck!

Right procedures must be followed in any activity. I told the employee to follow right channel so as to get the alternator. He came to understanding that no form of stealing was allowed. He returned the alternator. Why? He was in fear of consequences.

I realized that it was better to solve employee disputes by talking between yourselves first before reporting to the management. Therefore even in future, that`s number one strategy.
