Employment Relations Questions

Has the context of employment relations (including the economy, the political system, the nature of technology and cultural values) changed so much since Dunlop was writing during the 1950s that his theory has become irrelevant?

Despite the strides that have been made overtime in the market. There is little change in regards to the situation as it were during Dunlop’s time and the current situation. The segments that make up employment relations which include the economy, nature of technology, the political system, and the cultural values cannot be said to have changed so much. As Dunlop had noted that employment relations being dominated by three actors those being the state, the employers, and the employees, we would find the situation to have remained the same and we find the state playing a critical role in the provision of the formal rules. We have technology however influencing heavily the business world today and the customer influencing the decisions that organizations make. On the other hand, Dunlop’s theory would find no place today for it would have a lot of irrelevancies. The theory is too linear and it does not outline more of the external contexts that have developed overtime a good example being the gobal business culture and nature of business today.

8. What does control of the labor process mean does it make a useful contribution to understanding the nature of the employment relationship today?

Control of the labor process refers to the privilege that the managers have over the wage earners’ democratic governance where the planning, controlling, and doing their own work is controlled by their managers. It is core factor in employment relations and it is seen that the unbalance of power in the workplace is a result of unequal distribution of wealth in the society. On the other hand, conflicts within the workplace remain unresolved since the social structure that causes the opposing views remain unchanged. It is therefore clear that the more control is imposed on an employee makes them less likely to perform outside of those boundaries. But it is on the other hand possible to excel the employee performance if the control is shifted from external to internal locus. This means focusing less on external sources of conflict e.e. technology but instead focusing more on bring change on the social structure within the workplace.

 How do contextual factors impact on the operation of employment relations?

The contextual factors include, National Political system, National Culture and National Economy . these factors do among other things create opportunities and constraints from within the parties that are involved in employment relations. The constraints for instance includes the fact that they limit the opportunities available in dealing with conflict as well as change. On the national economy we can note that tariffs once secured Jobs in Australia internally but its collapse of the same came in with the fall of many industries in Australia such as the shoe industry and this in return. Considering that it has resulted to a free market and it being a factor in many industries, local industries are struggling to compete with the competition with cheaper and bigger as well as better competitors from overseas. We can also point out that the cultural together with the social environment in the workplace have notable changes with culture having changed for many reasons ranging from globalization, and also technology. Moreover, the peoples’ view on work «social environment» has also changed where things such as cost of living, work statuses and the impacts work has on the social life.

What has been the impact of neoliberalism on employment relations?

Neo-liberalism underlines and calls for the natural market what an employee is worth. This by far means that the factors in ER deal with the situation where the wages of the employees not forgetting the rarity of their skills be determined by the market. This situation has seen the employees with the rare skills get higher pay while those with common skills receive lower pay. Neo-Liberalism has driven the market to do more of outsourcing because of the situation of rarity of certain skills on employees. Nevertheless, it needs to be controlled through political safety nets, Barriers as well as putting up contingency plans. But to be able to get the impacts of neo-liberalization, it is important for there to be continuous monitoring on average wages per industry and on the cost of living.

What is corporatism? How does this approach to political decision-making affect employment relations?
This is the inclusion of the various interest groups in the decision making as well as in the policy formulations processes. This leads to the creation of policy that reflects the needs of the interest groups affected. Corporatism was first mentioned in Australia between 1983- 1995 where the federal labour government came into an agreement with the movement of trade union. This has resulted to unions managing to align the wages with the current cost of living thereby a creation of a more stable environment for the employees.

7.Why is the concept of the receding state used to describe current patterns of state restructuring in the industrialized economies? Is this concept applicable to Australia.

The concept of the receding state came to an end in 1996 when the liberal party won the elections and they applied a more Neo-liberalist approach to employment relations listening to trade unions but remained more employer focused. By all standards i find receding state going beyond IR/ER affecting other branches of government, how it operates and also how it is structured.

9. Drawing on overseas and Australian evidence, discuss the implications of privatization and the contracting-out of public services for employment relations.

Privatization is the transfer of ownership or function that is from public to being private sector. The implications of privatization on industrial relations is substantially far reaching. This is because the public sector industrial relations in Australia for instance are to a greater extent separate from the private sector; the disempowerment of workers coupled with the commodification of the labor power is an implication of privatization[ CITATION Stu13 l 1033 ]. In Australia, it developed slowly in the 1980’s increasing its pace in the 2000’2. Some quota argue that there is an increase in employment under privatization however, privatization is highly associated with the fall of employment. The public sector often has higher trade unionism levels of membership as well as involvement. In situations where the public sector has been in a monopoly position, privatization will have effects on representation on the organizations and trade unions of the public sector employees[ CITATION Stu13 l 1033 ]. Membership rates will drop, and an effect also on the specific industrial relations models like it is the case of the United Kingdom[ CITATION Han01 l 1033 ]. Privatization leads to more outsourcing activities which do not impact well on employment relations.
