Lab Report

Introduction

The objective of this lab was to illustrate the operating characteristics of a 3-phase induction motor by the use of the Four-Pole Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor module. The operating characteristics that were studied included: speed vs. torque, speed vs. active and reactive powers, and speed vs. line current.

Motor Speed vs. Motor Toque

The figure below illustrates the variation of the motor speed as the mechanical load applied to the motor increases.

As seen from the above graph, the motor speed decreases when the motor torque increases. That is, when the mechanical load applied to the motor is increased, the speed decreases.

Motor Speed vs. Motor Active ad Reactive Powers

The figure below illustrate how the squirrel-cage induction motor draws electrical power

The graph confirms that the squirrel-cage induction motor always draws reactive power from the ac power source. It also confirms that the motor draws more electrical power from the ac power source as it drives a heavier load.

Motor Speed vs. Line Current

The figure below illustrates how the line current varies as the motor speed is decreased.

As seen in the graph, the line current increases as the motor speed decreases.

Discussion/Analysis

In figure 1, the motor speed decreases when the motor torque increases. That is, when the mechanical load applied to the motor is increased, the speed decreases. Figure 2 confirms that the squirrel-cage induction motor always draws reactive power from the ac power source. It also confirms that the motor draws more electrical power from the ac power source as it drives a heavier load. Figure 3 indicates that the line current increases as the motor speed decreases.

Conclusion

This lab exercise allows the student to understand the the operating characteristics of a 3-phase induction motor by the use of the Four-Pole Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor module.
