Education for Sustainable Development

The government of Saudi Arabia seeks to foster sustainable development that nourishes the economy and improve the quality of life while preserving the environmental resources. The education sector is one of the pivotal pillars that will support the sustainable development plans. Investments into the sector to expand the scope of our education and improve the outcomes will greatly contribute to sustainable development (Chowdhury & Al-Zahrani, 2015).

Learning approaches should leverage existing technologies in order to reduce the associated costs as well as other educational resources. For instance, blended learning through the utilisation of online learning platforms integrated with some classroom sections is associated with huge savings and better outcomes (Al-Qahtani & Higgins, 2013).

There is a need to prepare teachers for the adoption of these dynamic approaches that minimise the resources channelled towards educating future generations. Integrating critical and creative thinking in the education system will ensure that learners gain the capacity to generate sustainable solutions for the kingdom’s challenges. In addition, learning experiences should expose the students to the depleting environmental resources and require them to design intervention projects that will contribute to sustainability (Alshehry & Belloumi, 2015).

Moreover, orienting the learners to technology-based solutions will greatly impact on their contribution to sustainable development. The learning experiences should be organised to include workshops, projects, conferences, and insightful debates on environmental sustainability. Online learning through the use of computers provides a unique opportunity for teachers to disseminate educational content to larger audiences of students at the comfort of their homes thus minimising the effects caused by student migration in pursuit of education (Alebaikan & Troudi, 2010).
