It is imperative to conduct a comprehensive assessment of a student growth and educational achievement. Multiple measures serves as one way of conducting an effective and quality assessment. Multiple measures are preferred since they ensure decision and construct validity. By decision and construct validity we mean that multiple measures provide teachers with the information required to come up with effective decisions as regards student education. Brookhart argues that teachers need to know what constitutes a measure and should know how to combine measures to come up with an accurate reading. In order to measure effectively, one has to take into account what is being measured, the various means of measuring the same item and numerous opportunities to pass similar assessment. To combine multiple measures effectively, conjunctive, compensatory or complementary, it is imperative to take into account the purpose of the assessment. In addition, teachers, leaders and policy makers should primarily think about and reasonably establish how the information will help in addressing the problem and then choose the multiple measures that will attain constructive information (Brookhart 2009).

Multiple measures should serve to demonstrate what students know, students’ ability, knowledge and understanding level (McMillan 2010). In addition, it should also serve to assist the teacher in planning future education activities suitable to the student’s level. Assessment should involve more than merely testing. It should lead to gathering of diagnostic information that will help the teacher to identify any particular area of the student learning difficulty. Consequently, this information should be used to plan counteractive learning activities as well as notifying the student and parents concerning the adjusted learning target. For effective assessment, students should be involved in their assessment as doing this allows students to be responsible of their learning, to comprehend how they learn as well as to achieve helpful interaction between the teacher and student (Brookhart 2008).

Moreover, formulating clear learning targets and criteria that is needed for the learning activity and informing students of such, together with teacher guidance, will enable the student to set goals and objectives and come up with a plan of how to attain them (Popham 2008). In addition, including students in their assessment will let them acquire self-assessment skills that will enable them to utilize teacher feedback to advance their knowledge and skills. Teachers should have the skill to describe and make use of multiple measures suitably, to reveal student learning. When teachers are assessment literate they will be able to extract information from multiple measure and to interpret it more effectively and hence will come up with better decisions for their students (Linn & Miller 2005).
