Eating habits during breakfast

Abstract

The principle aim of the study was to establish the eating habits of the overseas students.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A good breakfast helps people especially students to remain healthy, concentrate and to remain alert, remember important information, and to be creative. With this knowledge, the researcher decided to do a research on healthy eating habits among college students with UWS College as his case study.

The researcher used a sample of 40 UWS students both male and female. The sample constituted of 57.5% males and 42.5% females. The respondents were from different countries which included Middle East, China, Australia, Vietnam, India and Iran. He used the questionnaire method to collect the data. The questionnaires included 10 questions, nine closed questions and one open question regarding the nationality of the respondent. It had two parts two parts, the first part contained the demographic information and the second part contained questions regarding the eating habits of the respondents.

The researcher found out that 15% of the students take cereals for breakfast, 25% of them take toast, 17.5% take fruits and 17.5% take something different from the three. The study revealed that students do not take breakfast every day with only 6% admitting to taking it daily and 12% of the students not taking breakfast at all.

It was revealed that the students have poor eating habits with some giving weird reasons for not taking the breakfast. For those who do not breakfast, they gave different reasons with some saying that t they lack the time, others are too lazy and some are have no one to prepare the breakfast for them. A college student should not fail to take breakfast just because they do not have someone to prepare it for him or her. They should spare at least fifteen minutes of their time to make and take the breakfast

Introduction

Healthy diet is very important for all people. It helps maintain the general health. A healthy diet lowers some health risks like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart diseases and some kinds of cancer. It is important for a person to consume essential nutrients in appropriate amounts. Adequate amount of water should also be taken. A healthy diet should contain carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and fats. Calories help in supporting energy needs. A diet which is healthy will not induce excessive gain of weight; hence the body will remain healthy.

According to Rissanen (2008), healthy breakfast is crucial to our bodies and we have all heard that before. However, a good number of people skip breakfast for various reasons. Some claim that they are rushing to school, or even to the work place. Others simply take the wrong foods for breakfast. Foods like fried eggs and sausages that result to craving for carbohydrates later in the day should be avoided. Breakfast foods that are healthy are broken down slowly and they therefore keep the blood sugar in the body stable. The breakfast should contain some proteins to help keep feeling full and to avoid eating too much.

Most people especially students do not take healthy diets. This has contributed to the rising cases of obesity and other related diseases in schools. Given the importance of a healthy diet, the researcher decided to do a research on the eating habits of students and he picked UWS College as the case study. The researcher was able to obtain some very important data which he believes is a good representation of what overseas students take for breakfast.

After a long night without eating, the level of blood sugar level becomes low. Skipping breakfast is therefore not advisable as it will make your body to crave for something sweet. This will make one to take snacks yet snacks are not healthy foods. Taking breakfast with lots of carbohydrates and low fats will make somebody alert the whole day, research has revealed.

The researcher found that most students take toast for breakfast and this was represented by 25% of the sample population. 15% of the students take cereals for breakfast, 25% take toast, 17.5% take fruits and finally another 17.5% take something else different from the foods in the questionnaires. This is a clear indication that students have bad eating habits.

As regards the frequency of eating breakfast per week, 35% of the students take breakfast three to four days in a week. 25% of the students take breakfast five to six days a week. 10% of the students take breakfast either two or three days in a week. It was only 5% of the students who admitted to taking breakfast on a daily basis. Unfortunately, 12% of the students do not take breakfast at all.

The students also admitted to taking breakfast at different time of the day. 18% of the students said that they take breakfast before seven o’clock. The largest percentage, constituting of 50% take breakfast between seven and eight o’clock. 20% of the students take breakfast between eight and nine o’clock with 5% of the students taking theirs as late as past nine o’clock. 18% of the students also admitted to not taking breakfast at all.

It was also found that the students have different reasons as to why they do not take breakfast. 39% of the students said that they fail to take breakfast because they do not have time to prepare it. 11% of those who do not take breakfast gave a reason of being too lazy and another 11% said that they do not have anybody to prepare it for them. 39% of the students gave different answers from the choices given by the researcher. It is a pity that someone would lack time to prepare breakfast yet it takes less than twenty minutes to prepare some healthy breakfast.

Discussions

The researcher based his questionnaire on cereals, toast and fruits for breakfast because they are the most common and healthy foods affordable to many people. Basing on the results gotten by the researcher, students have very poor eating habits. This is shown by the fact that 15% of the students take cereals for breakfast. Cereals for breakfast are a very healthy meal recommended by the nutritionists and even doctors. This is because cereals have very high fibre content and low fats.

People are advised to eat healthy breakfast on daily basis. This kind of breakfast helps increase concentration and consumption of folic acid, calcium and vitamin C that are very useful in our bodies. These nutrients are low in college students’ diet as indicated by the findings and this has led to increased cases of obesity in schools.

Fruits are very healthy in our diets because they provide low release of energy and one is able to move until lunchtime without craving for sugary foods. A few examples of healthy fruits include kiwi fruit, berries and apples. They give some good amounts of vitamins and minerals. The healthy choice of breakfast motivates a person to make healthy decisions throughout the day. Fruits topped up with a slice of bread and natural yoghurt makes a very healthy diet for breakfast. However, only 15% of the students take fruits for breakfast (Dietz, 2010).

It is astonishing that 39% of the students lack time to prepare their own breakfast yet they expect to remain strong and healthy and to have maximum concentration in class. Some students said that they are too busy or they are in such a hurry to prepare and take breakfast. It is important to at least wake up fifteen minutes earlier in order to get sufficient time for breakfast preparation

It is also serious that most students take breakfast at whichever time they feel like with some taking it as late as past nine o’clock. One should at least have a schedule, that clear allocates time for breakfast taking. Immediately on wakes up, he should prepare and take his breakfast. College students should not give excuses of not having someone to prepare the breakfast for them because they are old enough to have the skills.
