Abstract

This study was undertaken to examine the eating habits of forty college students over a one week period. The participants were both male and female from UWS College and they were from different countries for instance students from Middle East, China, Australia, India, Iran and Vietnam. From the study it was noted that most students preferred eating toast for breakfast as compared to other healthier foods likes cereals and fruits. The frequency in which breakfast was eaten was also included in the study with a greater percentage of the students eating breakfast at least three to four times in a week. The findings of this study supports the results of several other studies that people in college more often than not skip breakfast meals and that they mostly take snacks. These findings suggest that health promotion for young adults in college should address significance of eating vegetables and fruits for breakfast with less recurrent eating of fizzy beverages and high fat mixture dishes.

Introduction

Breakfast can be defined as the first food taken by someone after waking up from a nights nap. It is more often than not taken at daybreak before undertaking the daily activities. Foods taken for brunch vary greatly from place to place but in most instances they may include carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables. It has been noted that of all the meals take in the day breakfast seems to be the most significant and helpful meal. One should also make sure that the meal is an impartial one. Healthy breakfast eating gives one the vigor to start a new day and also it has been accredited with so many fitness benefits which include weight control and enhanced concert during the day. It has been noted that natives who misses brunch are most likely to have problems related to attentiveness, metabolism and weight.

Many studies have been demeanored and they undoubtedly show the significance of eating breakfast and performing well in ones studies. Morse and Pollack (1988) recognized that the consequence of a good breakfast does not end after teenage years, but it is vital part of a vigorous way of life. According to scientists fat burning procedures are most lively in the morning while fat storage is more often than not done in the evening. Eating a healthy breakfast in the morning helps in increasing one metabolism to burn fats and calories which in turn provide the body with the energy needed to start the day.

According to the American dietetic association, children who rarely miss breakfast are inclined with better performance at school, score exceedingly in verbal fluency and creativity tests and are better in problem solving skills, and eye-hand coordination. There are many benefits which are associated with eating a healthy breakfast and they include: it givers one a nutritionally whole diet, one is able to contemplate more and there is augmented performance. By eating a healthy breakfast one is able to have more strength and patience so as to be able to engage in more demanding bodily activities.

The respondents are college students from UWS College. The males were 57.5% and the females were 42.5%. For the students who missed breakfast, the most frequently cited reason was lack of time to prepare breakfast (39 %). while another 11 % of the 40 students interviewed sated that there was no one to prepare the breakfast for them and another 11 % stated that they were too lazy to prepare breakfast. From the study it was noted that most students took toast for breakfast (25 %), while the other 15 % preferred cereals and another 18 % ate fruits. the frequency in which the students ate breakfast is also alarming with 35% of the students taking breakfast three to four days in a week and only 5 % of the students interviewed ate breakfast the whole week. while about 12 % of the students did not take breakfast at all.

Out of the 40 respondents only 50 % of them ate breakfast at around 7.00 am to 8.00 am while another 20 % did not take breakfast, another 10 % took there breakfast before 7.00 am, while another5 % ate after 9.00 am. Out of the forty students interviewed 42 % of them took milk for breakfast, while another 20 % took juice and another 17% took water. It was also noted that 18 % of them took nothing for breakfast.

Discussion

In the current generation it is alleged that the information students get in institutions of higher learning will enable them to advance their current eating and health habits. Similar to findings of surveys mannered with college student’s years ago, breakfast was the most recurrently omitted meal by students. Studies have shown that the skipping of this meal has had a say to nutritional insufficiency among students.

This study shows that missing breakfast is a common tendency among college students. It also provide a podium from which one can use to stalwartly persuade students in higher learning institutions to eat breakfast as a method of expanding their study approaches and upholding a healthy and constructive lifestyle. Another finding of this study is the general percentage of students who voluntarily identified themselves as having had breakfast.

The rate of students skipping breakfast was extremely high; the high rate of breakfast- skipping by students makes researchers believe that a significant percentage of the student body is at risk of dietary inadequacy (Nicklas et al., 2004). The study also found that the breakfast food mostly taken by students were toast followed by fruits. The most drink taken by students for breakfast was milk followed closely by juice while some student preferred taking water for breakfast.

The two most recurrently stated reason for omitting breakfast by the students was lack of time to prepare breakfast and others. No studies cited the grounds for missing to take breakfast were found. The findings of the study also showed that 35 % of the students believed that missing breakfast could have effect on their health while another 30 % did not now the importance of breakfast for concentration. Another 28 % believed in the importance of breakfast for concentration while another 7 % stated that it was not important.

Another finding of the study was that most students preferred taking milk for breakfast which was closely followed by the percentage of students who preferred taking juice (20 %). it was also noted that most students (50% ) took their breakfast between 7.00 am and 8.00 am. while only a much lesser percentage took it before 7.00 am (10%).

Conclusion

Even though this study was conducted on one college, it may imply that missing breakfast is a widespread trend with college students. Sources stated earlier have provided ample evidence that students performance levels in schools is basically affected by eating breakfast. The result from this study upholds the common conclusion that eating breakfast has a great effect with student’s performance in school. Student need to be taught the importance of breakfast and the nutritional value associated with it may result in students making sure that they have time to prepare and take breakfast. Also students should be encouraged on healthier breakfast eating habits. Students should make sure that that what they take for breakfast contains all the necessary components needed in the body and mostly proteins.
