Question 1: Settling Katherine into Care

Settling babies into childcare centers can sometimes be a challenging experience. Usually parents tend to worry over the welfare of their children while at the hands of childcare service providers. A phenomenon known as separation and stranger anxiety is also likely to occur when a child is left in an unfamiliar environment (Eisen & Schaefer 2005). In order to address Katherine’s concerns about separation and increase her confidence in the service, she should communicate with caregivers about key issues that are likely to affect the child’s wellbeing. For instance, she could communicate about the child’s preference, how she likes to be fed or soothed. Amanda should also continue breast feeding her child even after her enrolment into the center. First she should properly breast feed her baby before taking to the centre. She should also provide enough expressed breast milk to be given to Catherine while she is away.

Firstly, it is important that Amanda should familiarize herself and her baby with the caregivers and the new environment. This can be achieved by making short visits to the centre together with the baby before the actual settlement and letting the child get used to the faces, toys, voices and smells of the new environment. Secondly, it is also important that she should also communicate to the care givers about Katherine’s daily routine and schedule so that they can synchronize it with their own. Thirdly, Amanda should have positive conversations with Katherine about her new environment. For example, they could read a picture story book about starting school. Moreover, it is important for Amanda provide anything that her baby will require during her stay at the centre. For instance, she can pack bottles, nappies, and changing clothes among many other items that the child might require. Lastly, it is important for the caregivers to assess the child’s compatibility with the new environment. They should assess whether she is allergic to anything in the new environment and how she relates with other children. Subsequently, they should make adjustments in order to ensure that the child settles in well (Gray, 2004; Nutbrown, 2006).

It is argued that allocating a primary caregiver can further assist children to settle faster It is easier for children to form personal relationship with one staff member as opposed to having multiple caregivers. It would be advisable if Amanda could call the care providers and request them to allocate one staff to attend to Catherine at all the times whenever she is at the centre. Finally it would appropriate for Amanda to communicate any concern she may have to the care providers. This is the only gateway through which she may offer suggestion on how she would want her baby treated (Rolfe, 2003).

This menu adheres to the Education and Care National Regulations and Quality Standards mainly because it is holistic and balance. It incorporates different types of food types from different food groups. For instance includes food from food groups such as; vegetables, dairy, meat, iron, vitamin C and fruits among many others.

Questions 3: Providing support to families and children to promote healthy eating

Sugary foods and drinks are tremendous negative effects on health. First of all it is not healthy for Joel to continue consuming such foods as they can cause his tooth to decay or in worse still dental erosion. Secondly continued use of these foods can cause several other health complications such as diabetes, hypoglycemia and obesity among others.

I would try to explain to Joel the effects of unhealthy foods through drawings and health charts. For instance I would take a picture of a child with healthy teeth and that of one with decayed teeth and explain to him that the browning teeth is a result of eating unhealthy foods. As for Amanda, I would provide her relevant reading materials that illustrate healthy food types that she should provide to her children.

Questions 4: Preparing Joel for going to hospital

The government of NSW (through the children and young persons, care and protection act 1998) gives children and young people right to particular information about their live as pertaining to health, education and other details about out of home care living arrangement which relate to their lives. It is great that Amanda has talked to Joel about his medical situation. This prepares him psychologically as the ordeal will not get him by surprise. However, just talking to him about it does not eliminate his fears and stress. I would tactfully try to reduce his fears and stress by; (a) reassure him regularly that procedure is a simple one and less painful. If possible I would invite a doctor scheduled to work on him over to the house and together try to simplify the situation to him. (b) I would discuss the situation with the staffs at the childcare facility and tell them to encourage him. (c) I would buy him gifts prior to the day of hospitalization stressing to him that gifts are for heroes and that he is a hero. It is very crucial to encourage him to talk about how he feels.

Question 5: Safe collection of children

Children should be collected only by persons authorized by those who enrolled them. In this case I would first ask the lady to hand over her identification document and check if they correspond to the information provided on Katherine’s enrolment form.
