Executive Summary

This report analyzes the corporate social responsibility strategy of Eagle Valley Health Foods Pty Ltd and provides recommendations that will enable the company to be more sustainable. The report has used various resources like company reports, journal articles on sustainability, books and part literature on sustainability. The report has established various aspects that the company has to deal with to ensure sustainability. The company offices and factory have to be housed separately and there is need to but up permanent buildings to ensure weather changes do not adversely affect the workers. The huge amount of water being used for production of health bars has to be recycled to reduce wastage. There is need to rebrand the corporate social responsibility image of the company. Environmental conservation and ensuring that workers operate in a clean and safe environment has to a deliberate effort of the management.

Introduction

The purpose of this report is to study and provide findings and recommendations for business sustainability of Eagle Valley Health Foods Pty Ltd. The CEO of the company is interested in getting recommendations of how the company can be more sustainable. The company has been operating in old iron made buildings for a long time and extreme weather conditions have affected its operations. Sustainable practices are important in ensuring effective use of resources and boosting the corporate social responsibility image of the company (Artiach, Lee, Nelson & Walker, 2010). Sustainability is the effective use of resources to ensure that they are not depleted and negatively affect future generations. Sustainable development has to be manifested in ecology, politics, economics and culture. The welfare of the society has to be at the heart of the company operations besides the profit making objective (Lindgreen & Swaen, 2010). The report has given specific recommendation with regard to the building, recycling, and workers’ welfare but it is upon the company to set aside resources to make the recommendations a success. The report discusses the findings and then provides the recommendations.

Finding & Discussion

There is need for Eagle Valley Foods to improve its corporate sustainability image in order to survive in the modern competitive business world. As pointed out by the CEO of the company an enhanced sustainability profile of the organization will boost its reputation and project the company’s finances within the long term. The financial resources allocated for the corporate sustainability image is not enough considering the limited budget, hence there is need to ensure efficiency with whichever little that will be available. The corporate social responsibility profile as well as the operating system of Eagle Valley Health Foods will be improved through a substantial investment. The company is situated in Western Australia at the eastern outskirts of Perth and carries its activities on two storey warehouse that comprise of the factory area and the company offices. Corrugated iron has been used in building of the warehouse hence making it to fluctuate in temperatures from extreme hot in summer and extreme cold in winter. This has made electricity expense to be very high since it is used for heating the premises when it is cold and cooling them when hot. The building was put up in 1960s and is yet to be renovated. Another big challenge is the huge consumption of water that is needed in the production of health bars and the CEO of the company looks forward to reducing water consumptions as much as possible.

Conclusion & Recommendations

The corporate social responsibility of the company is at stake if it continues to operate at the current level while ironically focusing on healthy eating. A sustainable strategy will convince stakeholders and the entire community that company cares about the welfare of the society and environmental conservation (Linnenluecke & Griffiths, 2010). It is risky and not prudent at all for the company factory and offices to be housed in the same building in case of an incidents or accidents. The company offices have to be in separate buildings. In case of a fire accident the history and important documents of the company can go up in flames. Separating the company offices and company factory is important to ensure minimal damage in case of an accident (Du, Bhattacharya & Sen, 2010). The company management has to foresee risks that are a threat to its operations. The corrugated iron that has been used to build the warehouse is a health hazard since it has been in use for a long time and it is prone to rotting. Having a permanent building that will not be affected with changes weather will save the company in the long term from electricity expenses used for warming in winter and cooling and summer.

The building was put up a long time ago and there is need to renovate it or put up a permanent building that will cut down the electricity expense substantially. It is important for the company to take charge of its long term sustainability strategy to ensure that resources are used effectively (Dočekalová & Kocmanová, 2016). The use of use amounts of water for production of health bars can be addressed through recycling. Eagle Valley Health Foods has to engage engineers and environmental experts in designing of a recycling mechanism that will ensure that the water used in the production of health bars can be used again and this will make sure water consumptions goes down (Shamir, 2011). The company has to focus on activities that will reduce damage to the environment and ensure sustainable use of resources for production of goods. The company has to put in place mechanism of reducing pollutions and ensuring that refuse disposal does not pose a danger to the community (Benn, Dunphy & Griffiths, 2014). The community has to see that the company is concerned about the welfare of the people in the society besides targeting to make a profit. A safe working place and working conditions is a motivation to the workers and improve the corporate social responsibility image of the company.

Focusing on healthy eating without caring about the environmental is counterproductive to the corporate social responsibility image of the company. Corporate social responsibility has to focus on the environment, the community and welfare of workers within the organization.
