Skills Framework for Information Age (SFIA) was created to enable students and managers to map their skills and competencies according to some specified international standards. SFIA enables schools certifications to be recognized globally because it ensures that Information Technology courses meet the set standards in all countries (Bailey and Morrell, 2011).

Bailey and Morrell (2011) indicate that there are two parts of the SFIA that are recognized internationally. The first one is the Generic Level of Responsibility which defines responsibilities categorically from 1 to 7. The second part is the Specific Skill Level which defines a total of 96 specific skills in Information Technology.

In order to make a three year plan regarding my career, it is paramount that I understand the opportunities that might present themselves in my career journey. Secondly, I need to develop my skills to match the market requirements as well as for personal development.

Within three years I plan on having acquired the skills of strategy and architecture, business change, solution development and implementation, service management, procurement and management support and client interface as specified by the SFIA Framework. By so doing, I will be equipped to handle the massive information technology industry that has a lot of requirements and skills to meet before being fully developed in the career. Within the three years, I will have a chance to develop my competency and the SFIA Framework will enable me to reflect on whether I will have achieved the objectives.

Risk analysis

The Information and Technology industry is faced with several risks that to some extent affect the professionals. It is therefore important for me as a professional planning on developing my skills and competencies to analyze the risks likely to emerge along the journey. Firstly, the Information Technology industry is largely affected by changes in technology and the cycles therefore requiring professionals to constantly update their knowledge (Peltier, 2005). The changes of business environment and technological cycle therefore calls for professionals to undertake studies in risk mitigation so as to reduce chances of their education being irrelevant in the industries especially because more people are acquiring courses related to information technology.

Risk analysis begins with the process of identifying a potential risk factor. At times it becomes difficult for employees as well as employers to detect a risk especially if it has never been experienced before (Peltier, 2005). It is crucial for employees and employers to be braced for any changes in the business environment which is constantly changing.

Risks can be strategic if they relate to the long term achievement of personal or organizational goals. Another type of risk is that associated with operation of an organization and as such, is defined as anything that hinders day to day operation in a firm. The third form of risk is associated with finances and how they are managed by employees bestowed with the task of managing finances. The fourth form of risk is that of compliance because the employees and firms are expected to meet the set standards in the industry especially the international ones such as the SFIA Framework. The last form of risk is that associated with knowledge management whereby employees are expected to constantly undertake learning and training to ensure they retain their jobs (Peltier, 2005). At the same time, companies are working towards ensuring they retain the best employees to achieve organizational goals.

Learning reflection

So far I have managed to acquire the basic skills to cope with the entry level requirements as a software development. The skills I have obtained such as those of understanding .Net languages, security and architecture of computers are highly marketable. However I will constantly update my knowledge to ensure I remain at par with the changing environment in the industry of information and technology.
