Introduction

Since early times, people begun to cohabit and evolve in an environment that seemed to be primitive and hostile; a major skill that was essential for them to learn was the interpersonal skills. This facilitated the people of those times to share the same me level of understanding, protect each other and at the same time develop innovative ideas to deal with their problems that they were facing in their daily lives. The aspiration to be understood is native in relation to human nature. This understanding is an essential aspect in the understanding of the relation between health care and interpersonal connection. In their day to day activities, nurses they are usually faced with challenges of responding to the patient needs. This essay sets out to discuss the importance for nurses to use effective interpersonal communication skills in the workplace. This will be done by a discussing the concept of interpersonal communication. This will be closely followed by interpersonal communication skills related to the therapeutic relationship (basic communication skills needed when dealing with patients). The essay will also deal with interpersonal communication skill related to professional relationship that is the basic communication skills needed when dealing with colleagues.

Interpersonal communication is termed as process of exchanging feelings, information as well as meaning through both the nonverbal and verbal messages. Interpersonal communication entails more than just what is said to incorporate aspects such as how it is said and any other additional messages that are sent through body language, tone of the voice, gestures as well as facial expressions. The capability of interacting with the other workers and patients in the healthcare sector are greatly reliant on the interpersonal skills of individuals (Ivey & Ivey, 2003). The interpersonal skills really affect how nurses communicate and also how they will handle the issue at hand. Good interpersonal skills are closely linked to reliable and safe patient care. Yet, the interpersonal skills of nurses and their leaders are usually underdeveloped. Based on the fact that nurses work with a great number of people in their daily duties, it is essential that they develop and keep excellent interpersonal skills in their professional life.

Nurses need to have a number of basic communication skills so as to enhance the therapeutic relationships. One major skill that they should possess is listening. Listening is termed as being among the most prehistoric skill in healthcare provision. Listening is seen as being a vital component in nursing care and it is essential for establishment of meaningful interactions with their patients (Davis, 2009). Patients like to be listened to during their experiences with the nurses and other health practitioners. Listening is important in the nursing profession since it acts as a foundation when it comes to consequential interpersonal relationship. The use of listening in a way contributes to the patients overall general sense of satisfaction and well being in relation to the health care experience (Shipley, 2010). Though listening is essential in nursing, there are substantial variations when it comes quality of the interactions between and calls for urgent need of improvement. For communication to be effective, patients need to be sure that they are understood and heard and that the nurses are indisputably interested in the information being conveyed by the patient (Stickley, 2011). Thus, the use and development of theoretical frameworks and models that address listening as being an integral aspect in nursing care needs to be formulated so as to offer guidance in the use of listening in the nursing practice.

The other skills that nurses need to possess when relating to the patients is the non-verbal communication skills. Much of communication usually takes place through non-verbal communication. Our bodies and faces are enormously communicative (Talerico, 2005). The aspect of being able to read all the non-verbal messages or the body language is an essential factor in the establishment and maintenance of relationships. In their practice nurses and patients usually sends diverse messages as well as cues by their non-verbal behavior (Pullen, 2007). Thus, nurses need to be well aware of their body language prior to the exploration of the patient’s non-verbal behavior. However, nurses are usually not aware of the messages that they may communicate and how this might impact the patients or the relationship.

When it comes to communication skills related to the nurses professional relationship nurses need to have effective enhance the work relationship. Breakdown in communication usually brings along some negative effects. It is essential to note that change in the shift without a thorough report from the nurse how this will affect a patient. In instances, when this is omitted important information is not usually conveyed nor is the medication and treatments (Lieu et al., 2007). For instance, in a situation when a nurse is not informed that fallen in the previous shift. The incoming nurse, will not know that it is essential to assess the fallen pastimes of any injuries or any other form of complication that may occur. This will actually be as a result of a breakdown in communication between the nurses (Talerico, 2005).

Another communication skill that is essential between nurses and their co-workers is trust as well as the use of respective language to the other co-workers. Effective communication in the nursing profession calls for the development of relationships built on trust. Nurses are like employee in any other organization and thus they act as the building blocks when it comes to creation of relationships and thus they are more likely to work together in an effective manner (Grover, 2005). The very aspect of treating co-workers with respect will in a way improve communication relationships in the nursing practice. Levels of hierarchy are essential in hospital settings, and thus the development and practice of suing respectful treatment to other co-workers will in a way develop critical relationships and may lead to success in the future and also better treatment when it comes to caring for the patients (Lieu et al., 2007).

Conclusion

Based on the above discussion, it is clearly evident that effective communication skills need to be adopted by individuals in all professions. In their day to day activities, nurses they are usually faced with challenges of responding to the patient needs. The interpersonal skills really affect how nurses communicate and also how they will handle the issue at hand. Good interpersonal skills are closely linked to reliable and safe patient care. Nurses require interpersonal skills such as listening and non-verbal communication. Through these skills the nurses will be able to respond well and know how to treat the patients under their care. Patients like to be listened to during their experiences with the nurses and other health practitioners. Listening is important in the nursing profession since it acts as a foundation when it comes to consequential interpersonal relationship. In relation to their relationship with their co-workers nurses need to have a good work relationship and thus avoid breakdown in communication. In instances where there is breakdown in information patients may be affected. Nurses also need to ensure that they trust and respect each other. Nurses are like employee in any other organization and thus they act as the building blocks when it comes to creation of relationships and thus they are more likely to work together in an effective manner. These skills will go a long way in enhancing the relationship between nurses and other co-workers and thus improvement of the services offered to the patients.
