  1. Using the BCA provide the part which states the thermal/energy efficient ‘performance provisions’ for a dwelling in your state/territory

The BCA performance requirement for energy efficiency is to reduce greenhouse by putting energy into efficient use. In Queensland State there are four alternatives which have been given to builders in order to achieve 6-star energy efficiency requirement. The legislation gives an alternative of using outdoor living areas and photovoltaic (PV) cell which expand the choices available to customers (Home ideas). There are also other guidelines which are made specifically for certain climatic zones in Queensland to ensure energy efficiency.

  1. Using the BCA provide the part which states how to achieve (‘deemed to satisfy’) the performance provisions’ noted above

Part 3.12.1 Vol. 2 BCA gives guidelines on building fabric. Under the provision issues of fabric covers, thermal insulation, roofs, roof lights, external walls, attached buildings and floors.

Part 3.12.2 Vol. 2 BCA is about external glazing and shading. It relates to percentage area of glazing with comparison to the total floor area of the residence.

Part 3.12.3: building sealing is addressed under this part with the aim taking care of unwarranted air movements in a building. The elements that are put into focus are chimneys and flues, roof lights, external windows, exhaust fans and evaporative coolers. Another issue addressed is the construction of roofs, walls and floors. The aim of this section is to ensure that there are sealing measures that put a restriction on the air movement.

Part 3.12.4 Vol. 2 the purpose of this section is to ensure that the use of air conditioning is considerably reduced by putting into account that there is a natural cooling effect which is provided when air is in motion.

C) Using the information from part (b) above and BCA, identify the energy efficiency issues required for the design and construction of a dwelling.

The issues required for design related to building fabrics are

  • The total R values for building roofs in different climate zones.

  • The R-values for the roofing and R-values for walls

  • The minimum eaves projection distance

The design issues related to external glazing and shading are as follows

  • The orientation of windows

  • The amount of shading that should be provided

  1. Assume your client knows very little about the energy/thermal efficiency of buildings. Using the list below as a guide, state the advice you would provide to your client to help them reduce energy use:

  1. Hot water

For hot water it should be noted that solar, gas and electric heat pump systems have the production of the least greenhouse emissions in comparison to conventional electric storage systems. However, gas boosted is found to be the most greenhouse efficient when heating water.

Gas heaters possess star ratings that have received accreditation from Australian Gas Association (AGA), which help one to choose the equipment that is most efficient. The AGA label has six star rating that gives efficiency and comparative energy consumption under standard text conditions. Appliances with high star rating have the highest energy efficiency which means low comparative energy consumption.

Making use of the heat that originates from the sun is the best way produce hot water due to its environment friendliness. However it is not practical to rely on it for 100% of the provision of the hot water requirement due to variability in the weather. As a result of this fact need arises for boosting of the hot water by using gas or electricity. The heater consumes more power when the climate is cooler.

The heat pump need to be split in a way that the tank is inside the house while the compressor is outside, with the location of the heating circuit running between the two. This arrangement is beneficial in the cool climates, as the heat loss is minimised, and the small amount of heat lost is utilised in heating the house.

The heating points in a building should be near to heating points so as to avoid heating losses along the pipe work. It is recommended that water heaters should wrapped with an insulating jacket. The amount of energy used can be reduced considerably by reducing the amount of water used in the shower. This can be achieved through installation of low-flow shower heads.

  1. Heating and cooling

Passive design is meant to increase comfort and ensures that the need for heating and cooling minimised. In case heating and cooling systems are to be used, the choices are high efficiency gas and electric heat pump. Wood heaters are another alternative although this might not be feasible in all cases. No consideration should be made for use of electric convection or radiant heaters because of their low energy efficiency. It is possible for one to choose the right size of a heater or air conditioner as their energy efficiency is rated under the Australian government’s star rating scheme. In choosing gas heaters it is advisable to go for the highest possible efficiency. When installing the gas heat it should be flued to the exterior of the so as build up of gas within the house is avoided.

Slow combustion wood heaters which have the capability of burning wood completely are the most efficient type of wood heaters. In some jurisdiction wood heaters are not allowed due to their particulate emissions. Open fireplaces/chimneys have high heat losses making them to be very inefficient as heat sources.

Obtaining wood heaters that have a combination of space heat, water heating cooking and clothes drying is advisable. Although this is expensive depending on the house design, the system may have very high efficient and effective systems to install.

When choosing between fans and evaporative coolers, the point worth noting is that ceiling fans have high energy efficiency as compared to air coolers. When using ceiling fans, there should be an implementation of a minimum ceiling height of 2700mm. If the house location is in dry climate, evaporative cooling can be put into use.

Insulation of the house is the best way to ensure that heating and cooling systems are utilised efficiently. This ensures that loss of heat is (or coolth) that the system produces. In case centralised systems are being utilised there is need for them to have zone controls and thermostats in addition of the ducting and pipe work being well insulated.

Presently cookers do not have rating labels which can aid in choosing the most efficient models. However, the gas cook tops have high efficiency in comparison to electric cookers. Gas cook tops are cheap to use, their controls are more responsive in addition of producing less greenhouse. The production of greenhouse by the gas cook top is less that 50% of that produced by a standard electric unit. The production of greenhouse by a gas oven is low in comparison an equivalent quality electric model.

Fan forced ovens have high efficiency which exceed that of conventional units by 30%, which have energy wastage of up to 90%. Ovens which have levels on insulation, triple glazed and are low-e coated windows are the preferred option. Microwaves use considerably low energy standing at only a half of that used by ovens.

  1. Electrical appliances

When one is using appliances like ion box it is advisable that the gadget should not be left unused when on. This can be avoided by ensuring that one start the ironing excise when there is like to be no any other disruption. Electronic appliances like radio should always be put of when nobody is using them. The refrigerator consumes a substantial amount of power and operating it appropriately ensures that power is saved. It is recommended that the temperature of the refrigerator be adjusted to 37 degrees while that of the freezer be adjusted to 3 degrees (Ecomail.com, 2011). Checking the gaskets around the refrigerator and the freezer are clean and tightly sealed in addition of making sure that the energy saver switch is on are additional precautions that will ensure that energy is saved. Clothes washers are to be set to warm or cold setting. When using dish washers, make sure that they are full and the energy saving settings should also be utilised.

  1. Lighting

Remember to switch of the lights in rooms when they are not in use. For example switch of the sitting room light, study room lights when retiring to bed. Energy used in lighting can also be reduced by avoiding putting on the light during the day when there is enough natural light. Ensure that the lighting is not in excess as this means extra power consumption. It is important to use power saving lighting system. It is advisable to install the energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs where the lighting is used very frequently.

  1. Stand-by energy

When buying electronic gadgets, it is advisable to choose those with ENERGY STAR logo. The logo is an international standard for energy efficient electrical equipment, which is restricted to stand-by energy use. Television sets and radio should not be left in the standby mode when one is likely not to be using them for a considerably long time.
