Advanced Social Media and Its Impact on Democracy

The world has undergone radical advancement in technology especially in the area of information and communication. This fact has brought about the idea of global community. The people around the world are able to interact freely with each other. The challenges of time and cost for communication no longer exist. Adequate resources are readily available thus converting the whole world into a small village where transmitting information is quick and easy (Khiabany, 140). Because of this, there is promotion and advancement of digital democracy throughout the world.

For the pure democracy to exist there must be sufficient media for conveying information. In early days, there was limited means of communication. People could not share their ideas freely with others. Limitation of media prevented people from expressing their views and receiving ideas from others. Nowadays, people are able to connect with others from any part of the world. This is possible due to existence of internet and other resources needed for this particular purpose (Kaplan, Andreas, and Michael, 3). It is easy to share, promote or defend certain idea with as many people as possible. This reality has brought about development in democracy especially through digital means.

Sufficient cyber space is the key player to socio-economic development in the world. People use digital media to connect with the rest of the world. This alone develops hunger for knowledge on what happens beyond borders. People get constructive business ideas from the internet and sharing the same is easy and less costly. This implies that by utilizing and exhausting the available cyber space wisely, it is easy to address socio-economic challenges (Meso, Peter, et al, 31). People source information concerning business opportunities in the internet. Because of this, it is unimaginable to think how one can live in the current era without internet resources.

There is increased participation in governance and political advancement. Every citizen has now become actively involved in political issues going on in the world. People feel free to share their feelings about specific political issues through digital media (Bennett, W. Lance 26-28). This promotes political activism that many people thought the role was for the few individuals before the era of digital technology in communication. A political affair of any country in the world is no longer an internal issue. What affects America in political arena attracts views from every corner of the world. In the same way, one is able to advance his political agenda without restriction from certain quarters. Unlike before when resources were limited, the government would control political affairs within the country. Such control is no longer possible due to reality of digital media.

By allowing people to contribute in any public issue going on, they feel part of the development. Denying them such freedom only frustrates them. These days, this freedom is available and no one can withhold it from the people. Governments are adopting digital tools to help them deliver services to the people. In most cases, government communicates through digital media that is accessible to all. As a result, people spread that information hence it becomes public throughout the world. People comment on the information and share it with others hence advancing democracy (Bennett, W. Lance 34). This was not the case before and people could only concentrate on what is happening only within their borders.

Reality of digital democracy also contributes to creativity and innovation. Besides sharing information through written words, people also share creative drawings and animated images. They are able to show forth their special abilities to the whole world (Lambert, 105). By matching animated images with relevant words, communication is complete. Digital information technology allows such people to acquire wide exposure. Consequently, animators earn their living by selling art works through digital media. It starts as a fun and people get interested with the artistic work, which eventually becomes source of earning. This reveals how internet resources can contribute towards welfare of people around the world.

Although many people abuse internet resources, it is clear that they are highly beneficial. Availability of such resources promotes welfare of global community. People see the world as a village since long distance no longer separate them. People get concerned about what goes on in the world thus eliminating ignorance. Although it raises people’s purchasing capacity, they do not only become consumers but also get first-hand information on issues affecting their nations and world at large. Some nations view availability of internet resources as harmful and destructive. In the contrary, young generation, utilize the resources to prove them wrong. This trend leads to more freedom and wider cyber space, which promote democracy. As a result, there is great improvement in people’s social welfare throughout the world.
