Question 1: Using the reading from week 7 ‘communication and the self’, explain your model of self-disclosure in your Facebook profile. Give reasons for your choice of model.

My full names are ………I am an Australian of ….years and my gender is male. I am a second born in a family of four members. My cultural affiliation is such that I am inclined and socially influenced in reciprocation of my self-disclosure. I am very social, kind and understanding and leading a very private life. My greatest virtues are honesty and hard work with achieving life noble’s being my motivation for working. My strengths are that I am an emotionally stable individual who can stand pressure moments with great control. My weakness is that I am a perfectionist. On my education background, I school at Victoria University. During my free time I watch movies, listen to music or go for swimming along with my pals. My religious affiliation is Christianity. I can be contacted through my email or through the phone using this number or email respectively………..

In ‘Communication and the self, ’ a theoretical model on self-disclosure model in the community predicts that the major factors in the social set up which best explain the reasons as to why individuals , especially in the online community self-disclose their information. Self-disclosurecan be defined as what an individual canintentionally and voluntarily reveal regarding themselves to other people. This includes the information about their personal life, their feelings, thoughts as well as experiences. My model of Self-disclosure is purposeful and voluntary. Moreover, the model of self-disclosure is a positive experience which includes important gains that would be of benefit to me in forming or initiating intimate associations, reducing the levels of stress and seeking an approval or social acceptance my ideas. This self -disclosure model also enables me to reclaim the internal energy which initially focused on holding sensitive information about me hence making me more cohesive for easier integration with community members. The model is chosen because itemphasizesindependence and uniqueness in interpersonal relationships and interactions, rendering me prone to reciprocity and social influence. (327 words).

Question 2: Choice of a song and analysis

The song of choice is “Bad Romance» by Lady Gaga who is an American recording artist coming from the Fame Monster, a third extended play to the song. The lyrics of the song “Bad Romance” subsumes the paranoia the singer endures in her particular fame relationships and the phobia of derisive relationships she has.

Symbolic and Sacred spheres of the Song:

In the Symbolic and sacred sphere of the song and in relation to culture, the entertainment industry through the song in itsinner-workings depicts Gagathe singer as a sex slave symbolically.In fact the video to the song uses creative designs and fashion togetherwith placements of corporate products as well as decadence of the modern day with religious imagery. All these are rolled up in the lyrics and visual images of the song. The director of the song ensures that Gaga symbolically utilizes her theatrical old-ball presence to the maximum extent of revealing shock value of the song to the audience of the song fascinating them. The symbols used in the video permeate her imagery. There is the presence of control elements of the mind, like the horned Baphomet god which happens to be a great metaphor in the music industry

Value System:

The song «Bad Romance» subsumes the singer’s paranoia in her fame relationships and herphobia of derisive relationships. «Bad Romance» constitutes a spoken bridgewith a chorus which is full-throated with the lyrics sung talking about Gaga with someone’s best friend being in love. The song reveals the moral decadence present in the modern day especially in its video featuring her with some men in a surreal white bath-house.

The Ritual Sphere of the Song:

The ritual sphere of culture in this song and its video is revealed where Gaga is kidnappedby asupermodels group who drug herthen sell her for sexual slavery to a Russian Mafia. The rituals performed on her are exemplified by abstract ‘monsters’ which is a metaphor referring to her paranoia she faces. One of the concepts here is the ‘love monster’, a central theme behind the song. It is explained that Gaga was in a relationship, whereby she was allured by men in romance that seems not to be working out. The song explores her poor choice in males and her preference for lonely relationships (333 words).

Mobile phones have been so essential in the communication practice but in some other ways, they have entirely distorted the communication process as well as the communication practices. The cellular phones `are particularly the cause for bad phone practices especially in public places. The uses of mobile phones in public is considered as social disturbance causing disharmony in the social set up and it is highly sanctioned in most societies. The use of mobile phones can be of nuisance to others like in a commuter train or public bus, in restaurants or other places. Etiquette has been affected by the frequent use of mobile phones in public. With the mobile phones, communication practices have been greatly affected thus distorting the communicated messages. This is so because what was initially considered as good conversation or communication has been reduced to some abbreviations or abrupt catch phrases not understood by many people.

According to Johnson Nicola, a number of teenagers demonstrate their expertise in the use of technology as well as the internet as their leisure activity. Digital insiders are those teenagers who have always had digital technologies or even computers at some point in their lives. According to Johnson, schooling has brought an influence or medium of influence which has transformed the way students conduct themselves as far as technology is concerned. Television, new technology and advertising at home and school influence the way children or teenagers are socialized which is pivotal in their lives. This is particularly so because some teenagers are greatly addicted to the internet so that it has greatly affected their concentration in other activities (Johnson 2009). The concept of digital insiders and access to technologies has brought a new form of subjectivism between youth culture and the global media complex. The use of gadgets such as mobile phones has led to the emergence of a new type of student with new capabilities and needs. The use of the internet and mobile phones marks a generational change which should as well be translated with a change in teaching practices. These technologies have affected communication patterns and media culture as well as on the younger generations more than for the elderly one. According to the questionnaire generated on mobile use among teenagers, life without mobile phones is unimaginable for them. They mostly use their handsets for communication with their friends especially over social media.

Ambient virtual co-presence mainly focuses on the digital technology uses amongst young people while they are out of school or work. Here, the important thing understands the teenagers’ uses of the new technologies in their own terms in a way that regards them as digital natives and the social construction of these technologies. What is emerging here is that adults have a lot to learn from the youngsters. Mobile phones disrupt the existing public places and are an escape from the ‘real’ into the ‘virtual’ space. The gadgets on the other hand also integrate the ‘virtual’ space as pervasive presence in their everyday practices and places. They thus combine networked and remote relations as they present simultaneously everywhere turning places into a real/virtual hybrid by merging mediated or remote relations and physically relations are the ambient virtual co-presence. Youths always keep their gadgets open so as not to raise suspicion on switching off their handsets. This is considered as contently communicational acts of maintenance of a virtual co-presence. The questionnaires represented this idea especially among the youth who adored smart camera phones which they use to take pictures with them (Dong-Hoo 2012).

Mobile phone communications and their information services enable continuous connectedness. This has increased the teenager’s psychological, social, and physical uses. The problem with increased freedoms of using the handsets is that these users now experience freedom disorders which significantly deflect their value. Mobile gadgets connect these young adults enabling them to proactively address the issues affecting them. With their mobile nature, the internet has provided greater connectedness from any point. The positive impact of this is that the technology has provided greater access to information and freedom. This has fostered relationships between the teenagers and their peers judging from the questionnaire. Most of the interviewed teenagers use the handsets to continuously stay connected instantly from where they are. (558 words).
