Critical Reflection: Intercultural education and Contact zone By Phala Bun

Intercultural education and contact zone is an article that Phala Bun has used to put into perspectives the contribution of education through multicultural co-existence. The author has intelligently supported his discussion with the UNESCO guidelines and Cambodian Educational policy. I agree with the argument that education is promoting development of multi-ethnic workforce for Saudi Arabia and the global world (Berns et al., 2007 P. 13).

In my view, the schools are the primary contact centres where people meet for long periods in their early years of life. Therefore, it provides an ideal setting to promote co-existence values, intercultural intellect and tolerance. I support the author in that there are other contact zones such as offices, social media and seminars. However, the author should have added religions and worship centres as avenues that promote integration of various cultures to achieve a common goal. Therefore, they train people to coexist for common good (Obama 2010, P35–51).

I support the author’s proposition that scholarships promote intercultural exchange. A thesis published by Patterson (2006, P 1-5) revealed that students who had studied abroad has better understanding of the local people in that area and that they were more tolerant to cultural diversity. Exchange programs provide the attitude of working together and sharing goals hence promoting tolerance to cultural diversity.

The results of promoting intercultural exchange is peaceful co-existence locally and internationally. As the author mentioned, it results to better working relationships and culture. Additionally, it taps into unique abilities among multi-ethnic ethnic groups, better output and transformation of citizens to global citizens who can take up global responsibilities (Ujitani 2013, P.6–23).
