Critical reflection practice is a vital tool in any practical based profession and learning. It is a tool used in order to give room for greater heights in a learning process. In the modern society, there is an increase in need of care that makes nurses to be faced by various challenges so as to meet their patient’s needs. Reflective practice is crucial in that it forms the base, backbone or a strong foundation in transformation from classroom studies to field application of concepts. Therefore, reflection can be defined as the act of looking back on experiences in various contexts in a way that can analyze and deduct a number of lessons from the experiences. This enables a student to construct some knowledge, widen the mind and make informed opinions or views from the reflection (Chinn & Kramer, 2008).

Thesis: Critical reflection is an essential tool for nurses since it enables them to meditate and deliberate upon their personal and professional actions thus enhance some of their current and future professional undertaking.

The essay is going to focus on ways of reflection and how beneficial the practice is to training nurses. The reflective tools used are as depicted in the Gibb Cycle.

Importance of critical reflection

Critical reflection assists a professional nurse to a one motivated individual, to be practical and generally, insightful. It encourages training nurses to be ready and willing to critically look into issues, question them, investigate and support theories alongside other ideas that are in line with their workplace experiences. Moreover, critical reflection enables nurses to gain insights and attach meaning into some of their working skills and knowledge. One of the major aspects that encourage critical reflection is that it increases the many opportunities of nursing as a profession to become more practical. Practicality in nursing is meaningful and relevant (La Cava Osterman, Schwartz-Barcott, & Asselin, 2010).

In line with the (Australian Nursing midwifery council, 2006), critical reflection is a vital facet in safe nursing exercises. Nurses make use of critical reflection to in posing and answering questions about their practicals and prepare the most appropriate answers to their questions. From Benner and Tanner’s point of view, nurses must always exercise some degree of critical reflection in order to have the will look for answers to difficult and complex questions. Reflection entails looking back on previous experiences and learn from them when pracising. Precisely, critical reflection enable nurses to be more motivated, insightful and orderly in their profession.

Gibbs cycle has been proven to be the most effective tool designed to assist those who would wish to evaluate their feelings, thoughts and actions. Moreover, it enables individuals to understand the context as a critical aspect in evaluation of experiences. In line with Gibbs 1998, the cycle include various aspects or stages. It begins at description of the context. This is the first bit of the cycle. It states and answer question about the events of an experience. Feelings and thoughts stage states the thoughts, emotions and feelings that arose immediately the events happen and also afterwards. Evaluation is a stage that describes extensively how everything took shape, from the beginning to the end. Analysis is one of the most crucial stages as it tries to elaborate the exact factors that lead to the outcome of the events. At this point, various reasons are given to why and how the event had to take place, with additional information about its effect to the parties involved.Conclusion of the cycle tends to outline answer or options of any other steps one would have taken in regard to the events. It sums up a nurse’s perspective about the entire context.Future action explains what would be done in order to raise the chances of positive of positive outcomes of events and lower the likelihood of negative outcomes. In addition, it outlines the lessons learnt from an event, placing more emphasis on how one may gain from the events.


In conclusion, it is quite pronounced that critical reflection is a vital tool in nursing as a profession. It is majorly used in learning institutions in order to encourage full integration of theoretical knowledge alongside practical, while enhancing confidence in students’ learning Beam, O’Brien, & Neal, (2010). Critical reflection is one of the ways through which nurses enhance their present and future professional experiences. Thus, it is of great significance to a nurse who is faced with complex circumstances on every working day. Moreover, it has enabled nurses to asses themselves, actions and level of reasoning so as to ensure safe nursing and quality care in the society. Professional nurses use critical reflection to point out previous mistakes and achievements in teir line of duty.

My Critical Reflection on my perception of the role of nurses

The role of nurses has really transformed since I began my University degree. Previously, I looked at nurses as mere care providers and their major job was to provide patients with assistance in maintaining their health.

University education on nursing depicts various changes that are in line with the role of a contemporary nurse. These roles change as a result of a number of nursing models, patients’ empowerment and advanced self-care. Such models really favor the modern day policies in nursing. They assist the nurses to focus on a universal assessment of the needs of sick people in order to satisfy or deliver quality services. However, they demand that a professional nurse be more flexible in a way that he or she can move from direct provision of physical care to a more technical health-care.

Nursing models offer a platform for identification of nursing contributions to the health care department. In the modern world where the nurses are probable premiums, it is important that the framework for the models are embraced and used in order to communicate the voice of nurses.
