3Conflict management

Conflict encountered in my team

As elaborated by Jehn (1995, pp.1-5) there are two major forms of conflicts namely task and relationship conflict in a group. The conflict encountered in my group was task related, this is because my group members disagreed mostly on the perspective of our presentation, the approach and even the presentation itself. My team presentation is usually a routine task but it was in this particular presentation that we actually experienced more task related conflicts. The level of interdependence in the presentation task was high and thus a challenge when we experienced the conflict. Despite the successful resolution of the conflict that affected my group, a lot of time was wasted and thus leading to less time to complete a productive process of the presentation. The outcome of the process was however good (Chen & Ma 2002).

Conflict resolution

As regarded by Brewer &
Lam (2009) conflict resolution is entirely based on the level of individual commitment to the group and the overall objective of the group itself. Additionally Chan & Monroe (2006) agrees that conflict management is based on the level of communication between the members as this will promote the understanding of the root cause of the conflict and thus providing a conducive platform for conflict resolution. Out group norm is the one that tries to comprehend the conflict in order to provide better resolution to the conflict. When the team members disagreed, we dedicated our time to listen to the views of all members before providing a resolution based on a common understanding. This approach of conflict resolution is also echoed by Omika (2007) based on a comprehensive research on conflict management. The outcome of the resolution was thus positive because of consideration of these provisions.

Communication/Interpersonal skills

As elaborated by Levin (2010, p.219) communication process is the key aspect in conflict resolution process. He provides conflict resolution modes in steps as; smoothing, forcing, withdrawal, compromising and problem solution. Interpersonal skills are essential in problem resolution because it provides understanding on the problem and the fundamentals of its solution. According to Pammer & Killian (2003) it is important to understand the uniqueness of every group depending on different factors. This means that the solution for different problems is different based on their uniqueness and setting. In this case, ensuring smooth and compromising communication as an inter-personal skill was effective in tackling this assignment while withdrawal and avoiding the conflict was of less effect in completing this task.

I enjoyed working in this team because of a number of reasons, the first reason is because it gave me an opportunity to refine my problem solving skills and enhance my understanding of conflict in an organizational setting. Secondly, I also gained adequate knowledge on fostering a group relationship in order to attain a common goal. This was particularly essential when we managed to handle our internal conflict of approach and complete the presentation well. As stated by Werner & DeSimone (2008) interpersonal skills are necessary in enhancing collaborative activities and fostering positive relationships. This was thus another reason why I enjoyed working with the group despite the challenges.
