Aesthetics as a Problem in Information Visualization
Information Visualization provides insights into data and the data does not necessarily mean that pictures will look good. However, it is crucial to determine what makes the pictures that are used in data appear good. There is a lot to be learned from the process of enhancing insights and making pictures. Hence, comprehending how aesthetics interact is critical in information visualization. Most of the advanced research in aesthetics problem is done by the graph drawing experts. But it is a well known fact that most of the wisdom behind the use of aesthetics has more to do with heuristics rather than empirical evidence at the elementary level where cognitive tasks are required. One key disadvantage is that there is lack of empirical studies that are used to characterize visual properties in graphs. These are the visual properties which allow users to assume that the graph is visually appealing (Filonik & Baur, 2009). The only research in this area only focuses on theoretical properties of a graph and in most cases; it does not involve the semantics that associated with data.
Researchers such as Lau & Moere (2007) point out that the problem of aesthetics in information visualization is largely dependent on the subjective judgment of human beings. It may be based on the use of both intrinsic and extrinsic data which may be enhanced with effective mapping techniques. Hence, this indicates that aesthetics considers how data is interpreted and not based on the subjective judgment delivered. A visualization technique is used for conveying the patterns, but this only leaves the interpretation open to the user (Zhang, 2007). This means that information is used to a user for appealing purposes, despite the fact that the user may or may not have considered visualization before. Therefore, engineering aesthetics will always be a challenge in information visualization process.
